Cruz gives Warriors upper hand at John Carroll, 3-2

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – In a wild affair where John Carroll University fought back from a two-goal deficit to tie the game with 20 minutes left, first-year Leandro Cruz (Nottingham, Md./Loyola Blakefield) notched the game-winner in the 81st minute to give the Lycoming College men's soccer team its third straight win, 3-2, at Don Shula Stadium on Saturday evening, Sept. 20.

Cruz, with his back to the goal, secured a cross from first-year Alex Sincevich (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) just outside the left side of the goalkeeper's box, then turned and spun a hard-low shot past a diving keeper for the winner in the 81st minute. Sophomore Carter Block (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) also assisted the play with a  long lead pass to Sincevich, who took one touch before the cross, as Lycoming (3-2-2 overall) matriculated the ball 60 yards in 10 seconds for the goal.

Senior Christian Woobay (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) helped Lycoming take a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute, scoring when he powered a misplayed touch by the goalkeeper behind the keeper and across the goalline for his 18th career goal and 49th career point.

Senior Owen Magee (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) got his 12th career goal when he controlled a pass nearly 40 yards out with three touches before blasting a 25-yard bullet high into the net.

The Blue Streaks (4-3-1 overall) tied the game on a pair of goals from Dylan Helm, setting up Cruz's game-winner.

Sophomore Jace Bennett (Falling Waters, W.Va./Spring Mills) saw an end to his streak of four straight shutouts, but he made four saves in the win nonetheless. Brenden Moher stopped three shots for John Carroll.

The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, Sept. 27, when they kick off the Landmark Conference season by heading to the two-time defending champions, the 18th-ranked Catholic University of America, for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
