Maguire scores eight in Landmark victory over Goucher

TOWSON, Md. - Senior Katie Maguire (Garnerville, N.Y. / Albertus Magnus) led the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team with eight goals as the team claimed an 18-11 victory over Goucher College in Landmark Conference action on Saturday, April 26, at Beldon Field.  

Alongside Maguire, senior Alexa Baldwin (Bel Air, Md. / Harford Tech) secured four goals and an assist. With three points each, junior Riley Block (Hopatcong, N.J. / Morris Catholic) also added three goals, and senior Kailey Stocker (Ringwood, N.J. / Lakeland Regional) contributed two goals and an assist.

To begin Lycoming's scoring, Maguire bounced out in the first 30 seconds of the first quarter. Following a three-goal streak by Goucher, Baldwin darted down the field to add two goals with 6:23 and 2:32 left on the clock, respectively.

In the second period, Block and Stocker teamed for a goal in the seventh minute. With 3:34 remaining, Block returned for another point, bringing the score to 7-5. Maguire followed up with her second goal with 25 seconds left on the clock, as Goucher entered halftime with a three-goal lead, 9-6. 

Maguire pushed down the field to post a goal in the third minute of the third quarter, beginning a seven-goal scoring streak. Block followed suit in the fourth minute before Maguire followed up to tie the game at nine in the sixth minute. Baldwin came back with her second goal of the game thirty seconds later, giving Lycoming a one-point lead, which Stocker widened in the 10th minute with back-to-back goals. Maguire rounded out the scoring sequence with 2:48 left in play, bringing the score to 13-9.

Four minutes into the fourth quarter, Maguire returned to awaken the Warriors' offensive efforts. Less than two minutes later, Maguire pushed down the field, launching the ball into the back of the cage for the seventh time. With 4:10 remaining, Baldwin darted to the cage and notched her fourth goal, and first-year Emily Reese (Kingsville, Md. / Eastern Tech) followed moments later, helping bring the score to 17-11. With 26 seconds left in the game, Baldwin and Maguire teamed for a man-up goal, securing Lycoming a season-ending win. 

Junior Riley Block (Hopatcong, N.J. / Morris Catholic) and senior Katie Maguire (Garnerville, N.Y. / Albertus Magnus) have finished the season first and second in the Landmark Conference in goals per game. In March, Maguire became the fourth player in program history to surpass 200 career goals. With eight goals added against Goucher, Maguire ended her senior season with 244 career goals, second in program history.

Block, Maguire and senior Alexa Baldwin (Bel Air, Md. / Harford Tech) have all claimed spots in the top five in the Landmark Conference for points per game. Baldwin sits second in the league in assists per game, and Maguire claims the top spot for both ground balls per game and draw controls per game.  

With an assist against Goucher, Baldwin widened her program record for career helpers to 136. Baldwin surpassed the previous record set by Heather Suit (2005-08) in Lycoming's Landmark Conference match against Susquehanna on April 5.  

First-year Emma Yanders (Kempton, Pa. / Northwestern Lehigh) posted 11 saves in the cage for the Warriors. Yanders is second in the league in saves per game with an average over 10. 

For Goucher (6-11 overall, 2-6 Landmark), Sydney Lewis stopped 12 shot attempts. For Goucher, Camden Wes scored three goals. Emily Burk, Molly Smith and Amelia Lazzini also added two goals each. Alongside these top scorers, Tatiana Emeruwa posted one goal and three helpers. 

The Warriors end the regular season with an 8-8 overall and 3-6 Landmark record under first-year head coach Meaghan Smith. This season, Block and Maguire each earned Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division III Player of the Week honors. Maguire, Block and Yanders all received Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week accolades.
