WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Needing six goals to reach 200 in her career, senior Katie Maguire (Garnerville, N.Y. / Albertus Magnus) led the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team with nine, tied for second-most in program history, as Lycoming posted a 20-13 win against SUNY Canton in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon, March 6, at UPMC Field.
Maguire's nine goals bring her to 203 goals in her collegiate career as she became the fourth player in program history to reach 200 goals, finishing the game third in program history in goals. Maguire also had two caused turnovers and led the Warriors in ground balls along with senior Kailey Stocker (Ringwood, N.J. / Lakeland Regional), both snagging five. Junior Riley Block (Hopatcong, N.J. / Morris Catholic) also helped the Warriors (3-2 overall) with seven goals. Senior Alexa Baldwin (Bel Air, Md. / Harford Tech) and Stocker each added two goals to the board, and Baldwin contributed five assists, bringing her to seven points.
SUNY Canton jumped out with four goals in the first three minutes of the first period, claiming a short-lived lead. To kick off the Warriors' rally, Baldwin bounded down the field and lugged the ball into the back of the cage, putting Lycoming on the board in the fifth minute. Maguire followed 40 seconds later with her first goal of the game, and Baldwin turned around to add another goal to the board in the seventh minute. In the eighth minute, Maguire sprinted down the turf for a man-up goal that tied the game at 4, and she followed up less than a minute later to push Lycoming to a one-point advantage. SUNY Canton tied the game at 5 in the fifth minute, yet Block brought Lycoming back in the lead, 6-5, with 3:46 on the clock. With 43 seconds on the clock, Baldwin tossed the ball to Stocker, who scored the last goal of the quarter, helping the Warriors lead 7-5.
Maguire pushed down the field to secure a goal in the fifth minute, Block followed with one in the seventh and Maguire returned in the ninth with the Warriors' third goal to kick off the second quarter. The Roos scored a series of goals to tie the game at 10 with 2:34 remaining until halftime. With 1:56 left in the period, Stocker threw the ball into the corner of the cage for her second goal of the game. Maguire followed suit 30 seconds later with a free position shot, bringing the Warriors to a 12-10 lead at the break.
Maguire and Block led Lycoming's efforts in the third period, each adding three points to the board, as the Warriors dominated the third-period scoring. Block scored back-to-back goals in the first and third minutes to kick off Lycoming's efforts. Maguire followed suit with back-to-back free position goals in the fourth and fifth minutes before adding an unassisted score in the ninth minute. Block returned to the drive a free position shot into the back of the cage in the 10th minute, providing Lycoming an eight-point advantage, 18-10, leading into the final quarter.
In the fourth period, the Warriors maintained their advantage by adding two points to the board. Block scored both of Lycoming's goals, the first of which came in the fourth minute and the second of which came with 1:12 left on the clock.
In the cage for the Warriors, first-year Emma Yanders (Kempton, Pa. / Northwestern Lehigh) posted 12 saves. For SUNY Canton (1-3 overall), Olivia Scott clocked eight saves and Laura Falandys added six more.
Maddy Caron led the Roos efforts with four goals. Caroline Nappi, Ava Dupee and Olivia McCormick all contributed two goals. Lindsey Wunder also added four assists, followed by Caron with three.
The Warriors travel to Bronx, N.Y., on Friday, March 14, to play in non-conference action against SUNY Maritime at 4 p.m.
