Maguire, Block lead Warriors to victory in home opener against Marywood

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Senior Katie Maguire (Garnerville, N.Y. / Albertus Magnus) posted six goals for the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team as she became the seventh player in program history to post 200 career points to help lead the team to a 16-13 victory over Marywood University in their home opener on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 22, at UPMC Field.

With Maguire's six goals against Marywood, the senior midfielder sits with 205 total points. Junior Riley Block (Hopatcong, N.J. / Morris Catholic) added five goals for the team.

Senior Alexa Baldwin (Bel Air, Md. / Harford Tech) contributed a goal and five assists, tying Maguire with six points, and senior Kailey Stocker (Ringwood, N.J. / Lakeland Regional) added three goals. Sophomore Amina Abbas-Uddin (Beltsville, Md. / CMIT Academy North) added a goal, caused four turnovers and captured four ground balls for Lycoming (1-1 overall). Junior Autumn Shahan (Wilmington, Del. / Wilmington Charter) also secured four ground balls.

The Warriors jumped out with an early lead in the first quarter, securing five goals to Marywood's two. Block opened Lycoming's scoring with a goal in the first 40 seconds. Maguire followed with two free position goals in the sixth and 11th minutes as Marywood (1-2 overall) attempted to close the gap to one-point. Stocker followed with goals in the 13th and 14th minutes, both of which were assisted by Baldwin. 

In the second period, the Warriors grew their lead from two points to four, 9-5. Block drove forward with a free position goal in the fourth minute, and she followed up with the Warriors' last goal of the quarter with 1:55 left on the clock. Between Block's opening and closing goals, Maguire contributed two additional goals for Lycoming within a minute of each other in the 10th and 11th minutes.

Maintaining their offensive efforts after halftime, the Warriors added five goals to the board in the third quarter, ending the period with a six-point advantage, 14-8. To kickstart the Warriors' efforts, Block pushed forward with a goal at the bottom of the first minute, assisted by Baldwin. Baldwin followed up with a goal of her own in the fourth minute before returning to aid Maguire's fifth goal of the game in the fifth minute. Maguire pushed forward to earn her sixth goal a minute later before Block returned with her fifth goal of the game in the eighth minute, ending the Warriors scoring for the period.

Despite Marywood's offensive efforts in the final quarter, as they scored six goals, the Warriors maintained their lead and secured two goals to clinch the win. Abbas-Uddin fired in her first goal of the season two minutes into the fourth quarter, growing the Warriors' lead to five points. Stocker followed up with her third goal of the game in the seventh minute.

First-year Emma Yanders (Kempton, Pa. / Northwestern Lehigh) notched 12 saves off of Marywood's 34 shots against Lycoming. Jenna Scala served as Marywood's goalie, recording six saves as she faced 27 shots. The Warriors launched 22 shots on goal to the Pacers' 25.

Kaitlyn Smith and Natalie Yilanjian each contributed four goals for Marywood. Smith also added four assists for a total of eight points. Carly Lynch followed in goals, adding two, to the Pacers' score.

The Warriors travel to Shippensburg, Pa., on Monday afternoon, Feb. 24, to play against Wilson at 6:30 p.m., to face Shippensburg University.
