Annville, Pa. - Seniors Kailey Stocker (Ringwood, N.J. / Lakeland Regional), Alexa Baldwin (Bel Air, Md. / Harford Tech), Katie Maguire (Garnerville, N.Y. / Albertus Magnus) and junior Riley Block (Hopatcong, N.J. / Morris Catholic) each added three goals to lead the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team as it fell, 19-13, in non-conference action against Lebanon Valley in the season opener on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at Arnold Field.
Block led the team with six points, including her three goals and three assists, and Baldwin followed with four points. Block also led the team in shot attempts, notching eight. Maguire notched three goals, giving her 199 points in her career, as she is one point shy of becoming the seventh player in school history to post 200 in a career.
Down by six at halftime, Lycoming bounced back in the third quarter to end the period down one, 13-12. Baldwin kickstarted Lycoming's scoring with a goal in the fourth minute, which was assisted by Block after Lycoming cleared the field off a ground ball picked up by Stocker. Maguire added another goal at the end of the sixth minute before Block returned 30 seconds later with her third goal of the night. Maguire and Baldwin each claimed their third goal of the night in the 12th and 13th minute respectively to end the period. Lebanon Valley pulled ahead again in the fourth period with six goals, ending with a 19-13 victory. Stocker added her third goal of the night with three minutes left in play after Baldwin took advantage of a ground ball.
To kick off the first period, Stocker scored the first unassisted goal of the season 23 seconds into play, securing Lycoming a brief lead that Lebanon Valley matched at the bottom of the first minute. Block followed up at the top of the third minute with another goal, assisted by Baldwin. Lebanon Valley pulled away with two additional goals in the third and fifth minutes, bringing the game to 4-2. Baldwin returned, attempting to close the gap, with another goal in the fifth minute. Lebanon Valley added another goal in the sixth minute, which led into a seven-minute dry stretch without scoring from either team until the Dutchmen secured their sixth goal with 1:20 on the clock. The Dutchmen added two more goals in the last minute, ending the period with a five-point advantage, 8-3.
Maguire put the Warriors back on the board with a goal in the fourth minute of the second period. After Lebanon Valley added another point to their tally at the top of the fifth minute, senior Alyssa Zorbaugh (York, Pa. / West York) drove forward to launch the Warriors' fifth goal. Following a successful clear, Block pushed past Lebanon Valley's defense to secure her second goal of the game. Stocker returned with her second goal of the game three minutes later, closing the gap to 10-7. The Dutchmen added three more goals to end the period ahead 13-7.
First year Emma Yanders (Kempton, Pa. / Northwestern Lehigh) saved 11 shots in her debut. She saved three shots in the first period, including a free position shot attempt, and added two more in the second period. Yanders added three saves in the third period and three in the fourth quarter.
For Lebanon Valley (0-1 overall), goalkeeper Giuliana Ditsky blocked eight of the Warriors' 27 shots. Bethany Cohee earned the most points (10), contributing three goals and seven assists. Emily Beard followed with six goals. Alyssa Wene added three goals and two assists and Molly Whisler recorded three goals and two assists.
The Warriors return to UPMC Field at Keiper Stadium for the home opener on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 22, to play against Marywood University at 1 p.m.
