Wetzel sets program record against River Hawks

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Senior Mya Wetzel (Frackville, Pa. / North Schuylkill) finished with 12 points — including hitting two 3-pointers that helped her break the program record for 3-pointers in a career — as the Lycoming College women's basketball team faced a 68-56 setback against Susquehanna in Landmark Conference action on Wednesday evening, Feb. 12, at Lamade Gym.  

Wetzel's second 3-pointer with less than a minute to go in the third quarter broke the mark of 165, which Allison Mock set in 2009. Wetzel is fifth in the league, making 1.7 3-pointers per game. She secured her first 3-pointer halfway through the first quarter to tie Mock's record. 

Senior Ashley Yoh (Myerstown, Pa. / Eastern Lebanon County) led the Lycoming College women's basketball team with 16 points, and she added seven rebounds and a block. First-year Jocelyn McCracken (Jersey Shore, Pa. / Jersey Shore Area) helped lead the Warriors (3-18 overall, 2-12 Landmark) with 10 points. Junior Kami Abdo (Pottsville, Pa. / Nativity BVM) followed up with seven points and four rebounds. Senior Meghan Dufner (Washington, N.J. / Warren Hills Regional) also added seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals. 

The tight game included five lead changes and four ties as the Warriors maintained a lead for 9:13 of the game. 

  

Yoh jumped out with a layup to start the scoring in the first quarter. McCracken and senior Alicia Goldenziel (Moscow, Pa. / North Pocono) each hit a layup in the second and third minutes respectively. Wetzel followed by hitting a layup in the fourth minute and draining her program-record tying 3-pointer in the fifth, bringing the game to 11-2. Susquehanna responded with an eight-point run, closing the gap to one. Abdo drove forward with a layup that maintained the Warriors' advantage. With a jumper and layup, Susquehanna secured a one-point lead that lasted 30 seconds. McCracken then returned with a layup, giving the Warriors a one-point lead, which the River Hawks reclaimed seconds later with two jumpers. After nine minutes where the Warriors held the lead, Susquehanna ended the first quarter with a three-point advantage, 18-15. 

Susquehanna hit two free throws and a layup in the first three minutes of the second quarter, widening their lead to 22-15. In the fourth minute, Yoh drove toward the hoop to hit a layup, which she followed up with series of free throws. Halfway through the quarter, Goldenziel added a layup that tied the game, 22-22. Susquehanna responded with two free throws to reclaim the advantage for a minute, but Yoh returned with a jumper that tied the game at 24 with four minutes remaining. The River Hawks notched a free throw, securing a brief lead before Yoh drove forward again with another layup that gave the Warriors a one-point advantage. The River Hawks drained a 3-pointer 15 seconds later, resulting in another lead change. A minute later, Wetzel hit two free throws that tied the game again at 28. Yoh ended the Warriors' scoring with a jumper with 49 seconds left on the clock, as the Warriors trailed by one at the break, 31-30. 

The River Hawks started the third quarter with a layup, kicking off the scoring. McCracken answered with a layup of her own at the beginning of the second minute. Susquehanna increased their lead to 38-32 as Lycoming called a timeout with six minutes remaining in the quarter. Dufner lined up and drained a 3-pointer with four minutes on the clock, and she followed up on this momentum in the seventh minute, when she pushed forward to make a layup. Sophomore Makenna Hartman(Alexandria, Pa. / Juniata Valley) posted two free throws seconds later, closing the game to three points. Abdo rebounded a shot attempt by the River Hawks and drove the ball to McCracken, who darted down the court to make a layup. With 45 seconds left in the quarter, Wetzel launched her second 3-pointer of the game. McCracken added two free throws as the clock ticked down, ending the Warriors' scoring with Lycoming trailing by two points, 48-46.

The River Hawks pushed ahead at the beginning of the fourth quarter to widen their lead to more than 10 points. Abdo hit a jumper in the second minute to begin Lycoming's offensive efforts. Dufner passed the ball to Abdo in the fourth minute, spurring a 3-pointer that closed the River Hawks lead to nine. Yoh contributed a free throw in the seventh minute, bringing the score to 64-52, before adding a layup a minute later. Wetzel pushed in to add another layup with less than a minute remaining.
 

Sydney Weyant led the River Hawks (12-9 overall, 9-5 Landmark) with 15 points. Zoie Maffei contributed 13 points, 15 rebounds and five assists. Lauren Klein added 10 points and Carly George clocked 14 rebounds to aid the River Hawks' efforts.


The Warriors return to the Lamade Gym on Saturday, Feb. 15, for a Landmark Conference game against Moravian at 2 p.m. The team's five seniors will be honored before the game.
