Shelley's late goal carries Warriors past Catholic

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.—Junior Loghan Shelly (Manheim, Pa. / Manheim Central) found the back of the cage off a penalty corner with less than four minutes to go, breaking the tie and sending the Lycoming College field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over the Catholic University of America on Monday, Oct. 13 in a Landmark Conference matchup at UPMC Field.

In the process, Lycoming (8-4, 2-2) matched last season's total of eight victories for the most in program history, while also beating Catholic (1-10, 1-3) for the first time in school history.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Cardinals took the lead midway through the second quarter, when Bella Reyes slipped in a goal off a pass from Katie Flynn, which gave Catholic a 1-0 lead at halftime.

The Warriors bounced back in the second half. Ten minutes into the second half, sophomore Lacy Eckard (Muncy, Pa. / Muncy) took the rebound off a deflected shot and got the second attempt past the Catholic keeper, tying the game on her fourth goal of the season.

It appeared the game may have been heading towards overtime as the score remained 1-1 well into the fourth quarter. However, after a penalty corner, Shelly took a pass in from senior Katie Loughran (Ottsville, Pa. / Pennridge) and buried it in the right side of the cage at the 56:39 mark of the contest to give the Warriors the lead.

The Warriors were able to hold the lead for the last few minutes of the contest, with Catholic's final push coming undone due to a foul off a penalty corner in the final minute, with Lycoming playing keep-away until the clock hit zero.

Senior keeper Isabella Bobé (York Springs, Pa./Bermudian Springs) stopped five shots to aid in the comeback effort for the Warriors, earning her 21st career victory in cage.

The Warriors return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 15, when they host Goucher in a Landmark Conference matchup. The contest will get underway at 5 p.m. from UPMC Field.
