31-point second quarter lifts Warriors past Widener, 48-12

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – On a day when the Lycoming College football team dedicated the team's locker room in honor of defensive coordinator Steve Wiser's 55-years at the College, Wiser's defense allowed just 219 yards and forced three turnovers in a 48-12 win over Widener University in non-conference action at David Person Field on Saturday, Sept. 7.
 
Lycoming (1-0 overall) broke open a scoreless game with a 31-point second quarter, while the defense allowed only a field goal before the fourth quarter.
 
Sophomore Terrence Oliver (Sharon Hill, Pa./Academy Park) rushed 12 times for 143 yards and a score and junior Karson Kline (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) had three catches for 74 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Will Fish (Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) was 6-for-13 passing for 86 yards and three scores and sophomore Quasim Benson (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) added 15 rushes for 44 yards.
 
First-year Kyle Flack (Southampton, Pa./William Tenant) posted two field goals and hit all seven extra points.
 
Senior Joey Rivituso (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame-Green Pond) posted six tackles and a sack, sophomore David Schley (Burlington, N.J./Burlington Township) added seven stops and a breakup and junior Matt Trolinger (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) also added six stops. First-year Daniel Atsou (Capitol Heights, Md./Suitland) had three tackles for loss. Junior Tyler Marshall (Trappe, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) and sophomore Tenye Martin (Newark, Del./Wilmington Charter) each had interceptions.
 
As the first-quarter ended scoreless, the Warriors were in the midst of a 10-play,m 60-yard drive capped when Fish rushed in from five yards out after a Widener pass interference penalty.
 
The Pride responded with a field goal, but Marshall returned the ensuing kickoff 61 yards to the Widener 39-yard line. Three straight Warrior penalties backed the ball up 20 yards, but Oliver rushed for 32 yards in the next two plays and then Fish found Kline for a 27-yard score.
 
Three plays later, Marshall intercepted a pass and returned it to the seven, setting up a 28-yard field goal from Flack, making it 17-3 with 4:39 left in the half. The Warriors got the ball back with 2:16 left and Oliver found a hole and scored on a career-long 84 yard run to make it 24-7. The Warriors forced another quick 3-and-out and after a 16-yard punt, Fish found Kline for a 37-yard touchdown with 41 seconds left.
 
Lycoming posted a 36-yard field goal on its first possession of the second half and added a seven-play, 36-yard drive for a score after Martin's interception on their second, as Fish found first-year Aiden Barlett (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) for a two-yard score.
 
A fourth-quarter safety and touchdown brought Widener its last points and the Warriors scored on sophomore Jay Huber's (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) lone pass in the game, a 33-yard fourth-down strike to sophomore Chris Caracter (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) with 23 seconds left.
 
Bryce Casey rushed 16 times for 29 yards and a score. Michael Caloiaro finished 9-of-15 for 84 yards. He was intercepted twice. Jalen Walker finished with seven tackles and two sacks to lead the Pride defense.
 
The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, Sept. 14, when they head to the defending national champions, SUNY Cortland, for a 12 p.m. game.
