Warriors down Mount Aloysius, 2-1, in home opener

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – A goal in each half was enough to lift the Lycoming College men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Mount Aloysius in non-conference action under the lights at UPMC Field on Wednesday, Sept. 4.

The Warriors (3-0 overall) withstood an 89th minute score from Mount Aloysius (1-2 overall), not allowing a late shot after George Campbell fired a shot into the right corner after winning a ball in the box.

The Warriors jumped out to the lead in the 18th minute when senior Christian Barnes (Baltimore, Md./Friends School of Baltimore) sent a free kick into the box, where junior Christian Woobay (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) headed it across the box, where a waiting senior Owen Magee (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) finished the play.

Junior Thomas Geyer (Havre de Grace, Md./Harford Tech) put the game away in the 78th minute, scoring with a laser into the left corner from 25 yards out.

The Warriors held a 15-6 advantage in shots and 5-1 in corner kicks, while the Mounties committed five more fouls, 17-12.

First-year Jace Bennett (Falling Waters, W.Va./Spring Mills) stopped two shots to earn his third win. Sam Denchfield made four saves for the Mounties.

The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, Sept. 7, when they host 22nd-ranked Case Western Reserve University at 4 p.m., at UPMC Field.
