NEWARK, N.J. – Junior
Keller Chamovitz (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) fired a 20-yarder into the left corner in the early minutes of the second half to help lift the Lycoming College men's soccer team to a win at regionally-ranked Rutgers-Newark on Wednesday night, Sept. 18 at Frederick Douglass Field.
Â
The Warriors (5-1 overall) outshot the Scarlet Raiders (4-4 overall), 10-6, and finished two opportunities in the second half despite the Raiders, ranked sixth in Region IV by the United Soccer Coaches, holding a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Â
Chamovitz, playing with a cast on his left arm and after missing last season due to injury, scored his first goal of the year in the 48
th minute, getting a quick touch pass from sophomore
Davis Lopez (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood), making one move to find space and firing right into the lower left corner to give Lycoming the lead. Chamovitz set up the possession by intercepting a pass on the defensive end seconds before he finished the play.
Â
In the 84
th minute, he was critical on Lycoming's second goal as well, as he won a second ball header just outside the goal box, allowing senior
Owen Magee (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) to win the ball on the ground before he dribbled into the box and beat the keeper to his right.
Â
First-year
Jace Bennett (Falling Waters, W.Va./Spring Mills) finished with four saves in his fourth shutout of the year, while Rutgers-Newark's Pedro Flores had three stops.
Â
The Warriors get back in action on Saturday, Sept. 21, when they host 23rd-ranked John Carroll University, at 4 p.m. at UPMC Field.
