Russell pitches 11 scoreless, paces Warriors in split

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior Kylie Russell (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) tossed 11 scoreless innings, including a three-hit shutout in the second game to help the Lycoming College softball team to a split with Drew University in Landmark Conference action at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on Sunday, April 14, winning 2-0 after Drew took the first game, 6-3.

Russell (8-2) became the eighth Warrior to reach 25 career wins with the three-hit shutout, allowing just a walk and striking out six to become the fourth Warrior to reach 250 strikeouts with her final punchout of the game in the seventh inning. Senior Kylie Segraves (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) also became the 16th Warrior to reach 100 career hits during the second game.

Russell, who threw 99 pitches in the 2-0 win, allowed no Rangers (13-11 overall, 4-6 Landmark) past second base in the second game, with a first-inning runner being thrown out stealing at third by junior Rachel Daub (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale Area) coming the closest. Russell retired six in a row twice, including the last six batters she faced.

The Warriors (13-8 overall, 6-4 Landmark) rallied through a windy fourth inning to score a pair of runs. Senior Rachel DeWolfe (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) singled on a ball that dropped over the third baseman's head. Sophomore Mallory Rodarmel (Montoursville, Pa./Loyalsock Township) followed with a popup that fell past the second baseman in fair territory before being called foul. On the next pitch, though, she drilled a single down the right field line that allowed DeWolfe to reach third. Sophomore Alex Eckerson (Hopatcong, N.J./Morris Catholic) followed with an RBI single, a popup on the infield that the wind took and fell in front of the second baseman. Sophomore Hailee Sobieski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Catholic) followed with a sac fly to make it 2-0.

Rodarmel and DeWolfe led the Warriors 10-hit attack, as both went 2-for-3 with a run. Molly O'Brien went 2-for-2 with a double for the Rangers.

Allie Porbansky (4-5) pitched six innings, allowing two runs and 10 hits. She struck out one.

In the first game, Drew scored six runs in the second inning, more than enough to hold on for a 6-3 win.

The Warriors scored two runs in the bottom of the second, with Rodarmel leading off with a walk before Eckerson singled into right center and Sobieski was hit by a pitch to load the bases, for Russell, who singled up the middle. Sophomore Claire Alexander (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) followed with a sac fly.

In the third, the Warriors got a run closer, with junior Avery Eiswerth (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) walking and stealing second before scoring on a single to left from Eckerson.

Eckerson led the Warriors, going 2-for-3 with a run and RBI. Fran O'Kleasky led the Rangers with a three-RBI triple in the second.

Teagan Bradley (5-4) allowed six hits and three runs. She walked four and struck out three. Eiswerth (4-5) pitched three innings, allowing eight hits and striking out seven. Russell pitched four scoreless innings, allowing two hits, walking five and striking out four.

The Warriors are back on the field on Wednesday, April 17, when they host King's at 3 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader.
