Miller’s gem sets up Warrior comeback at Moravian

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Sophomore Noah Miller (Winter Springs, Fla./Winter Springs) pitched a career long eight innings of five-hit ball, giving the Lycoming College baseball team inspiration for a five-run ninth inning in a come-from-behind 5-2 game one win over Moravian University in Landmark Conference action on Saturday afternoon, March 30, at Gillespie Field. In the second game, the Warriors fell, 9-3.

Miller (2-2) dealt 102 pitches to reach the eight inning mark, allowing just the five hits, a walk and a hit batter, allowing an unearned run and striking out seven. After Moravian (9-12 overall, 3-5 Landmark) scored a second inning unearned run, only one more runner reached third base until the bottom of the ninth inning, as Miller let two runners on base just once, in the eighth inning when he induced a flyout to end the inning with runners on first and second.

Lycoming (5-17 overall, 2-9 Landmark) was held to two hits and two walks in the first seven innings by starter Ross Huffman, who struck out seven. After a scoreless eighth, Lycoming got started quick in the top of the ninth, as junior Evan Mok (Daly City, Calif./St. Ignatius) delivered a double down the line to lead off before sophomore Zachary Pleska (Salem, Ohio/Columbiana) was hit by a pitch. The pair moved up a bag with a double steal, setting up sophomore Nick Reeder (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area), who delivered a looping liner that fell just out of reach of a diving second baseman, scoring the tying run. First-year Ryan Tan (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck) followed with an infield single that score Pleska. A sac bunt squeezed in Reeder and a walk set up junior Jacob Schilling (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury), who singled to left to drive in the fourth run of the frame. Schilling scored after sophomore Greg Wirin (Interlaken, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) singled, coming home on a wild pitch.

In all, the Warriors sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning, scoring five runs on six hits, two walks, a hit batter and three stolen bases.

Moravian did score a run in the bottom of the inning, but Reeder caught a liner and doubled off a runner at first to end the game with a double play.

Mok led the Warriors, going 3-for-5 with a run. David Olsako went 2-for-4 for the Greyhounds.

In the second game, Tan went 2-for-2 witha r un and RBI to pace the Warriors, who fell victim to a 12-hit Moravian attack, 9-5.

Lycoming got on the board in the third inning, as first-year Aidan Everly (Beavertown, Pa./Midd-West) walked to lead off before Schilling delivered a single through the right side, setting up a sac fly by Reeder. After a fielder's choice, Pleskar brought in Schilling with a single to left.

The Greyhounds tied the game in the bottom of the inning and took a 5-2 lead in the fifth before the Warriors closed within two in the seventh. Sophomore Nick Hoheb (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) doubled to lead off and scored on a single up the middle by Tan.

After Moravian scored four in the bottom of the inning, the Warriors rallied with a pair of runs in the ninth. Tan singled with one out, moved to second on a walk by sophomore Jack Kelly (Alexandria, Va./Alexandria City). After a flyout, Reeder walked, setting up a two-RBI single by Mok. A strikeout ended the rally, however.

Sophomore Jake Wilber (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) (0-6) pitched five innings, allowing eight hits and no earned runs. He walked one and struck out one. Aaron Flyte (2-1) earned the win for the Greyhounds, pitching seven innings, allowing six hits, two walks and two earned runs. He struck out five.

Chris Pow went 3-for-4 with two runs, a double and two RBI and Cole Cherkas, Paul Croyle and Nick Henry all had two hits and a RBI for Moravian.

The Warriors will host Juniata College on Tuesday, April 2, at 3:30 p.m. at Depew Field at Bucknell University in a Landmark Conference clash.
