Warrior pitching stars in split at Myrtle Beach

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Senior Kylie Russell (Cogan Station, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) tossed seven scoreless innings, striking out six and allowing four hits, and junior Avery Eiswerth (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) tossed six innings, allowing two runs, as the Lycoming College softball team beat the Mississippi University for Women, 2-0, before falling to Mount Aloysius, 2-1, in the nightcap on Monday, March 11, at the North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex.

In the first game of the day, junior Rachel Daub (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale Area) paced the offense, going 2-for-3 with a run and a RBI triple to lead the Warriors to a 2-0 win over MUW.

The Warriors got on the board in the third inning, as sophomore Claire Alexander (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) singled into center field with one out and scored when Daub hit an opposite field triple down the right field line.

In the sixth, Daub singled to lead off, moved to second when Eiswerth drilled a liner off the third baseman and scored on a single through the left side by sophomore Mallory Rodarmel (Montoursville, Pa./Loyalsock Township).

Russell (1-0) threw five shutout innings in her first start of the year, allowing four hits and striking out three. She worked out of a second and third jam with no outs in the fifth, getting two pop outs and a groundout to end the threat. Eiswerth worked two perfect innings to get the save, striking out one.

Rylie Grisham (3-1) took the loss for the Owls, allowing five hits and two runs in 5 1/3 innings.

In the second game, Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Preseason Pitcher of the Year Sierra Walters pitched a complete-game three-hitter for Mount Aloysius to edge out just as game a Warrior pitching effort, 2-1.

The Warriors tied the game at one in the top of the fourth, as DeWolfe walked with one out, took second on a fielder's choice and scored on a two-out single by sophomore Alex Eckerson (Hopatcong, N.J./Morris Catholic).

The Mounties (3-1 overall) scored in the bottom of the inning, though, and turned double plays in the sixth and seventh innings to thwart Warrior rallies.

Walters struck out five and walked one in the win. Eiswerth (1-1) pitched the first four innings, allowing seven hits and two runs. She struck out three and walked one. Russell finished the game with two perfect frames, striking out two.

The Warriors get back on the field on Tuesday, March 12, when they face Maine-Presque Isle at 11 a.m. and Oswego at 3 p.m. as their time at the Fast Pitch Dreams Spring Classic continues from the North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex.
