WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior Sean Farrell (Allentown, Pa/ Allentown Central Catholic) scooted around the net, found some space from the right side about eight yards out and found the bottom left corner to set off the celebration as the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team rallied past Gwynedd Mercy, 10-9, in double overtime on Saturday, Feb. 24, at UPMC Field.
The goal was Farrell's third of the day and followed a key faceoff win by junior Colin Maninkil (White Hall, Md./Hereford) and was set up after a shot went wide, where Farrell was the backup. Junior Joey Hoover (Selinsgrove, Pa./ Selinsgrove Area) also added three goals and an assist and senior Rory Hines (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) added two scores.
The Warriors (1-0 overall) fell behind 8-6 with 11:20 in the third, as Gwynedd Mercy (0-2 overall) took advantage of five man-up goals, two at the end of the third to take the lead before Josh Devine scored in the fourth. The Warriors responded, though, as senior Andrew Ednie (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) started the comeback before Hoover scored back-to-back goals to lead, 9-8 with 6:11 left. Gunnar Seaman tied the game with 1:50 left on a man-up goal, though, setting up the game's dramatic finish in the second overtime period.
The Warriors scored the first two goals of the game and ended the first period with the last goal to make the score 3-3 after Hines' first goal. Lycoming tied the game at four heading into halftime after Farrell scored a quick one in transition off a give from junior Ryan Farrell (Swedesboro, N.J./Archmere Academy), who cleared it and found some space before finding Sean Farrell for the goal.
Junior Troy Scozzafava (Coopersburg, Pa./ Southern Lehigh) led the Warriors with two assists. Mankill led the team with eight groundballs, winning 11-of-21 faceoffs and senior Jakob Switzer (West Pittston, Pa./Wyoming Area) added six groundballs and two caused turnovers. Ryan Farrell also caused two turnovers, along with Ednie.
Seaman led the Griffins with four goals and Devine added three. Nathan Tindall picked up four groundballs and Justin Carney caused four turnovers.
Junior Ben Franco (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) posted 23 saves and allowed eight goals for the Warriors. Jared Devine stopped 18 shots for the Griffins.
The Warriors will return to UPMC Field on Wednesday, Feb. 28, at 4 p.m. as they host Ithaca College in a non-conference game.
