Block parties as Warriors rally past Marywood in opener, 16-13

SCRANTON, Pa. – Sophomore Riley Block (Hopatcong, N.J./ Morris Catholic) used six goals and two assists to keep the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team a step ahead in a 16-13 win over Marywood University in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 24, at the Multipurpose Turf Field.

Block scored three goals in each half, with two of her goals and an assist coming in the fourth quarter, after Marywood held a one-goal lead late in the third quarter. Junior Katie Maguire (Garnerville, N.Y./ Albertus Magnus), who opened the fourth quarter scoring with a free-position goal, added four goals and picked up three ground balls.

Senior Rylie Cranmer (Butler, Pa./ Butler Area) recorded three goals and one assist, also pacing the team with three ground balls and two caused turnovers and juniors Alexa Baldwin (Bel Air, Md./ Harford Tech) and Kailey Stocker (Ringwood, N.J./ Lakeland Regional) and senior Alyssa Zorbaugh (York, Pa./ West York) each recorded a goal. Baldwin led the team with five assists and she also picked up three ground balls.

The Warriors (1-0 overall) scored the first four goals in the contest through the first nine minutes, but Marywood (0-2 overall) closed within a goal at the end of the first quarter and, although the Warriors again led by three two minutes into the second quarter, 7-4, the Pacers raced back to tie it at eight in the last minute of the half, before Baldwin scored unassisted to give Lycoming a narrow advantage going into halftime.

The Pacers led by a goal twice in the third quarter before the Warriors tied the score with 3:25 left in the period on a man-up goal from Stocker, taking the game into the fourth quarter tied at 12. Maguire gave Lycoming a lead with 12:19 left before Block scored the next two Warrior goals to give Lycoming a 15-13 lead with 6:03 left. Cranmer iced the game on a give from Block with 1:16 left.

Natalie Yilanjian led the Pacers with five goals. Avery Meighan scored four goals and  Kaitlyn Smith had three goals and three assists.

Senior Zoe Stauffer (Lititz, Pa./ Warwick) made 14 saves to earn the win for the Warriors and move within 20 of reaching 500 stops in her career. Jenna Scala made six stops for the Pacers.

The Warriors host Mount Aloysius on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. in a non-conference game at UPMC Field.
