DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Junior Kami Abdo (Pottsville, Pa./Nativity BVM) posted a career-high six assists to lead the Lycoming College women's basketball team against the eighth-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in the Daytona Beach Shootout at the Ocean Center on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 21.
Senior Mya Wetzel (Frackville, Pa. / North Schuylkill) led the team with eight points as she reached 500 career points in the contest. Senior Alicia Goldenziel (Moscow, Pa. / North Pocono) and sophomore Ann-Marie McMurtrie (Centre Hall, Pa. / Penns Valley) each added six for the Warriors (1-9 overall).
After the Warhawks (9-1 overall) jumped out with two free throws in the first quarter, Wetzel hit a layup in the paint in the second minute. Senior Ashley Yoh (Myerstown, Pa./ELCO) added a jumper and Wetzel drilled a 3-pointer in the third minute as the Warriors led 7-5. Junior Allison Fisher (Lower Burrell, Pa. / Burrell) posted a 3-point jumper with four minutes remaining. Sophomore Makenna Hartman (Alexandria, Pa. / Juniata Valley) followed up with a jumper, but Wis.-Whitewater led 25-12 at the end of the first quarter.
Yoh kicked off the second quarter with a jumper, and senior Meghan Dufner (Washington, N.J. / Warren Hills Regional) followed up four minutes later with a layup in the paint. Sophomore Alyssa Reisinger (Kulpmont, Pa. / Mount Carmel Area) hit a jumper, Wetzel added a free throw, and Goldenziel made a jumper in the last two minutes of play.
Yoh hit a jumper and Goldenziel contributed a layup to lead Lycoming's efforts in the third quarter. With a minute left, Dufner made two free throws. Sophomore Sydnie Stone (Muncy Valley, Pa. / Montoursville Area) added two free throws at the start of the fourth quarter and Goldenziel followed up with a jumper in the paint. In the last five minutes, first-year Summer Emlet (New Cumberland, Pa. / Red Land), McMurtrie, and junior Katie Bena (Clarksville, Md. / River Hill) hit free throws for the Warriors. McMurtrie posted a layup to the board, and Bena followed up with another with a second remaining.
Maggie Trautsch led the Warhawks with 13 points. Kacie Carollo added 10 points and Katie Hildebrandt contributed seven, as the Warhawks shot 49 percent (28-of-57) in the game while holding Lycoming to 32 percent (14-of-43).
The Warriors are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 4, for a non-conference game at Misericordia University.
