Warriors take Catholic to the limit

WASHINGTON D.C. – Spurred on by a career-high 13 kills from senior Camryn Quelet (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown), the Lycoming College volleyball team delivered an epic comeback from two sets down, but Catholic University used a three-point run late in the fifth set to hold on for a 3-2 (25-13, 25-22, 19-25, 19-25, 15-13) Landmark Conference win on Friday evening, Oct. 4, at Franny Murray Court.

Quelet reached double-digits in kills for a second time in her career and the first since 2021, as she notched 13 kills to go with five digs to lead the Warriors (6-9 overall, 0-1 Landmark). Senior Brynne Bisel (Julian, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) added 12 kills and 16 digs for a double-double, junior Cameron Upcraft (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley) added eight kills and two blocks and first-year Angela Farnham (La Plata, Md./McDonough) posted five kills.

Senior Ali Koval (Mansfield, Pa./North Penn-Mansfield) added 20 digs, two aces and five assists and sophomore Haley Balgavy (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) added 29 assists and 17 digs. First-year Liz Mayer (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) added four blocks.

After the Cardinals (8-10 overall, 1-0 Landmark) won the first two sets and tied the third set at six, the Warriors scored five of the next six points, with kills coming from Quelet, Bisel, Farnham, senior Kendall Myers (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) and Farnham again, put Lycoming ahead 11-7. After Catholic got within two, the Warriors scored three in a row and only let the Cardinals within three points once more in a 25-19 win.

In the fourth set, the Warriors used an 8-2 run early in the set to take control, with a kill from Bisel giving Lycoming a 10-4 lead and extended that lead to eight before Catholic closed within five late in the set. Mayer set down a kill to end the 25-19 win, though.

Ahead 9-8 in the fifth set, the Warriors fell victim to four straight points from Catholic to take a 12-9 lead. The Warriors got as close as a point three times after that, but Catholic was able to close out a 15-13 win.

Julia Raab led the Cardinals with 17 kills and Ava Borcky added 11. Kate Berra posted 28 assists and 14 digs, Gabry Hernandez-Ferraiuoli posted 34 digs and three aces and Grace Guerin posted four blocks.

The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Oct. 5, when they head to Goucher College for a 12 p.m. Landmark Conference match.
