Warriors swarm in 2-2 draw with Messiah

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – It may be the most controversial goal in the history of the Lycoming College men's soccer team – no less than three players after the game said they touched it with a wink and a smile, but on film, it sure looks like junior Keller Chamovitz (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) scored on a true Olimpico in the 80th minute, helping Lycoming to a 2-2 draw with Messiah University in non-conference action at UPMC Field on Wednesday night, Oct. 2.

Or did it find the head of senior Jaeden Asare (Letterkenny, Ireland/Perry Hall (Md.)) or senior Joe Bamfo (Lake Grove, N.Y./Connetquot)? Maybe first-year goalkeeper Jace Bennett (Falling Waters, W.Va./Spring Mills) got it across the goalline. The fact of the matter is the ball got across the goalline thanks to both a brilliant corner kick from Chamovitz and a swarm of Warriors at the goalline ready to see it in.

We'll look at the film and argue about it for a while. What isn't up for debate is that the regionally-ranked Warriors (6-2-2 overall) got their first positive result against the Falcons (4-5-1 overall) since a 0-0 tie in the 2018 MAC Commonwealth Championship game that Messiah eventually won on penalty kicks.

Lycoming's first goal came after a called handball in the box in the 33rd minute, setting up a penalty kick goal from junior Christian Woobay (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard). Lycoming held an 11-4 advantage in shots and a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks in the game.

Still, the Warriors had to answer back twice, with Dylan Englehart scoring in the sixth minute before Woobay tied the game before halftime. Patrick Lee found a ricocheted cross and scored in the 57th minute, leading to the goal from the Warriors in the 80th minute.

Adam Carter stopped two shots in the draw for Messiah and Bennett faced those four shots in net for the Warriors.

The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, Oct. 5, when they host Susquehanna University in the annual Battle of the Boot at 3:30 p.m. in Landmark Conference action.
