Block’s fourth-quarter scores advance Warriors to MAC Freedom semifinal

GLENSIDE, Pa. – First-year Riley Block (Hopatcong, N.J./Morris Catholic) scored the only two goals in the fourth quarter to break a tie with fourth-seeded Arcadia University and lift the No. 5-seed Lycoming College women's lacrosse team to an 11-9 win in the first round of the MAC Freedom Championship on Monday, May 1, at Jean Lenox West Field.

Block and sophomore Katie Maguire (Garnerville, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) led the Warriors (9-8 overall) with four goals each, as Lycoming won the first-round game to advance to the conference semifinal for the second year in a row, where they will face top-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology (15-2 overall) on Wednesday, May 3, at 4 p.m. in Hoboken, N.J.

Maguire moved into the top 10 in program history with 67 goals this year, sitting ninth in the program's single-season record book, while also becoming the 13th player in program history to reach 75 points in a season, finishing the game with 76.

In addition to her four goals, Maguire won seven draw controls. Block added to her four goals with four ground balls, two caused turnovers and three draw controls. Junior Rylie Cranmer (Butler, Pa./Butler Area) scored two goals, an assist and picked up two ground balls. Sophomore Kailey Stocker (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) notched a goal and a ground ball.

Sophomore Alexa Baldwin (Bel Air, Md./Harford Tech) earned two assists to move into a tie for seventh in the program's history with 28 helpers this year. Senior Tess Arnold (Elmira, N.Y./Elmira) and junior Zoe Stauffer (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) led the way with five ground balls, as Arnold also caused four turnovers.

The Warriors took their last lead after Block found the back of the net on a give from Baldwin from deep behind the net. Block also notched the final goal for the Warriors on a give from Cranmer with five minutes left, giving Lycoming its lone two-goal lead of the night.

Down by three goals with four minutes remaining in the first quarter, the Warriors gained possession after senior Madison Wineburg (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area) picked up the ground ball and got it to Cranmer outside the arc before she ran it in for the first goal. At 1:07, Maguire struck from the top of the crease and tied the game up with 0.04 seconds under pressure from two Knights defenders.

Maguire tied the game at four on a free position opportunity with 5:49 left in the second and a minute later, Cranmer gave the Warriors their first lead of the game on another free position chance. Winning the draw after the Knights tied at five, Block cleared the ball for an unassisted tally from just outside the crease to head into the half with the Warriors ahead, 6-5.

Block scored again with 12:53 left in the third on a ground ball pickup on a rebound outside the crease. Maguire tied the game at eight on a free position chance and Stocker tied it at nine with 1:31 left in the third, as Baldwin found her from behind the cage.

The Knights were led by Morganne Dee with five goals, two ground balls, and a caused turnover.

Stauffer earned the victory for the Warriors with 13 saves, giving her 184 on the season, the sixth-most in program history. Emily Griffith made 19 saves for the Knights.
