Wetzel, Russell, Warriors sweep up Wilkes to move into second

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior Morgan Wetzel (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) went 6-for-7 with a double, a homer and six RBI and junior Kylie Russell (Cogan Station, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) won her eighth straight start with her MAC Freedom-leading fifth shutout of the season, as the Lycoming College softball team moved into second in the conference with a sweep of Wilkes University on Wednesday, April 19, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex, winning game one 8-6, before taking game two, 3-0.

Wetzel powered the Warriors (20-8 overall, 10-2 MAC Freedom) in the first game, going 4-for-4 with a double, a run and four RBI, and then hit a two-run homer in the second game to propel the Warriors to the win. Russell (10-3) allowed four hits in the second game and left six Wilkes runners on base, as she walked one and struck out eight while lowering her season ERA to 1.07.

Lycoming reached 20 wins for the fourth time in head coach Melissa Montoro's 10 years as head coach, as she finished the afternoon with 149 career wins.

Wetzel finished 2-for-3 with a run, a homer and two RBI in the second game and sophomore Avery Eiswerth (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) went 1-for-2 with her first homer of the season.

The Warriors got on the board with a second-inning homer from Eiswerth before first-year Claire Alexander (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) led off the third with a single to center field before Wetzel launched her one-out homer.

Meanwhile, the Colonels (17-11, 3-7 MAC Freedom) left one runner stranded on third and three at second in the contest, while Russell retired six in a row from the fifth to the seventh and 12 of the last 14 batters she faced.

Lauren DeMarco (7-3) took the loss, allowing four hits and striking out seven.

The Warriors batted around in the fourth inning of the first game to break it open, with first-year Hailee Sobieski (Hopatcong, N.J./Morris Catholic) starting the inning with a single. After a sac bunt, Eiswerth reached on a fielder's choice that didn't yield and out, then stole second. A groundout helped Sobieski score before Russell drilled a single into right. Two walks loaded the bases for Wetzel, who singled up the middle to plate the last two runs of the frame and make it 5-1.

The Warriors tacked on three more in the sixth inning, as Alexander walked with one out, stole second, reached third on an error, which allowed junior Kylie Segraves (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) to take second and Wetzel again delivered a single up the middle to plate two runs. Wetzel scored when junior Rachel DeWolfe (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) singled to make it 8-1.

The Colonels scored five in the top of the seventh, but senior Payton Whary (Coal Township, Pa./Shamokin Area) got her first save of the season with a strikeout to end the game.

The Warriors scored in the first inning when Alexander led off with a double, took third on a single from Wetzel and scored on a sac fly from DeWolfe.

Eiswerth (5-1) earned the win, allowing 10 hits and two earned runs in 6 2/3 innings. She walked one and struck out eight.  Hope Mullins (2-5) took the loss, allowing five runs in 3 2/3 innings.

Alexander scored three runs and went 1-for-2 for Lycoming. Kayla Burleson went 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead the Colonels.

The Warriors step out of conference and head to Susquehanna University for a 3 p.m. doubleheader in Selinsgrove on Thursday, April 20.
