Wetzel leads Warriors at Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Senior Morgan Wetzel (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) kept up her torrid hitting with five on the day to raise her average above .400 to lead the Lycoming College softball team, as it dropped a non-conference doubleheader at Susquehanna University, 10-4 in game one and 8-3, in game two, on Thursday, April 20.

Wetzel went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs in the first game and then went 2-for-4 with a run and a double in the second game, moving into a tie for third in career hits with 124 with Amy Cline '13 and within one double of the school record of 33 set by Kristi Weaver '16.

The Warriors (20-10 overall) got on the board in the first game when first-year Claire Alexander (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) doubled to lead off, took third on a sac bunt and scored on a wild pitch.

Susquehanna (20-12 overall) scored five in the bottom of the inning, but Lycoming chipped that lead down to two over the next two innings. In the second, first-year Mallory Rodarmel (Montoursville, Pa./Loyalsock Township) walked after sophomore Rachel Daub (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) singled. After moving to second on a caught stealing, junior Kylie Russell (Cogan Station, Pa./Jersey Shore) delivered a RBI single. In the third, Wetzel doubled with one out, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a fielder's choice that didn't produce an out.

The River Hawks scored five runs in the next three frames though. Wetzel scored Lycoming's last run after doubling, moving to third on a groundout and scoring on a pinch-hit single by junior Missy Van Klingeren (Byram Township, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional).

Russell went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Warriors. Nicole Wuertz led the River Hawks, going 2-for-4 with two runs, a homer and four RBI.

Sophomore Avery Eiswerth (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) (5-2) took the loss, allowing 10 hits and walking three in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out three. Amanda Amerman (4-1) earned the win, allowing six hits and three runs in five innings.

Junior Kylie Segraves (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) paced the Warriors in the second game, going 4-for-4 with a run and a RBI and first-year Kristen George (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) went 2-for-3 with a run and double.

The Warriors scored two runs in the first, with Segraves singling before Wetzel doubled, setting up RBI singles from Eiswerth and Daub. The Warriors notched another run in the seventh when George doubled to lead off, moved to third on an error and scored on a one-out single to left from Segraves.

Susquehanna scored four runs in the first, two in the third and two in the fourth to take the win.

Ashley Warner led the River Hawks, going 2-for-3 with two runs, a double and three RBI.

Brianna Jones (10-2) earned the win, as she allowed five hits and two runs. She struck out five. Russell (10-4) allowed 11 hits and five earned runs in the complete game. She walked one and struck out four.

The Warriors are back in action on Saturday, April 22, when they head to King's College for a key MAC Freedom doubleheader at 12 p.m.
