Russell’s gem lifts Warriors to split with Lebanon Valley

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior Kylie Russell (Cogan Station, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) tossed a four-hit shutout in the second game, striking out eight and throwing 113 pitches to lead the Lycoming College softball team to a 1-0 win over MAC Commonwealth-leading Lebanon Valley College on Sunday afternoon, April 16, in non-conference action at the Shangraw Athletic Complex. Lycoming fell in the first game, 10-1.

Russell also scored the game's lone run, as she led off the third with a single, moved to second after a hit batter and scored on a throwing error on a sac bunt from junior Kylie Segraves (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area).

In the circle, Russell (9-3) won her seventh straight decision with a dominating effort against the Flying Dutchmen (21-5 overall), mixing eight strikeouts, nine flyouts and four groundballs. Six runners reached base and just one made it to third before being left stranded in the sixth.

Erin Sinatra (7-2) allowed two hits and an unearned run in the loss. She struck out four.

In the first game, the Warriors (18-8 overall) fell victim to a Dutchmen offense that slugged four homers in the 10-1 six-inning win.

Nicole Kratz led the Dutchmen, going 2-for-3 with four RBI, as she hit homers in the first and third innings. Pinch-hitter Brooke Edwards had a pinch-hit grand slam in the sixth.

The Warriors scored in the fourth inning when junior Rachel DeWolfe (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) doubled to lead off before scoring after a pair of groundouts.

Senior Payton Whary (Coal Township, Pa./Shamokin Area) (5-4) threw three innings, allowing seven hits and six runs.

Before the game, the Warriors honored the team's five seniors – Madalyn Bechdel (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain), Mackenzie Glosek (Coal Township, Pa./Shamokin Area), Kaleigh Kinley (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area), Morgan Wetzel (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) and Whary.

The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, April 19, when they host Wilkes University in a 3 p.m. MAC Freedom doubleheader.
