Warriors comeback swinging to split at Stevens

WEEHAWKEN, N.J. – With nine runs in the last two innings, the Lycoming College softball team overwhelmed Stevens Institute of Technology in the second game of Saturday, April 15's doubleheader, winning 10-3, after falling 7-2 in the first game at Weekawken Waterfront Park.

Down 2-1 heading into the sixth inning, the Warriors (17-7 overall, 8-2 MAC Freedom) got started when junior Kylie Segraves (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) walked to lead off before senior Morgan Wetzel (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) singled.

An error loaded the bases and Segraves scored the tying run on a wild pitch. First-year Hailee Sobieski (Hopatcong, N.J./Morris Catholic) walked to reload the bases and a fielder's choice that didn't yield an out allowed Wetzel to score the go-ahead run before a sac fly brought in the third run of the frame. A pair of Stevens errors allowed two more runs to score.

In the seventh, the Warriors batted around again, as Segraves reached on an error before Wetzel delivered an opposite field double, setting up a RBI single from junior Rachel DeWolfe (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff). Sobieski also delivered an RBI single and after a flyout, both sophomore Avery Eiswerth (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) and first-year Kristen George (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) added RBI singles.

The Warriors, down 2-0, began their comeback in the fourth, when Segraves and Wetzel singled to lead off before DeWolfe walked to load the bases. A sac fly from Sobieski scored Segraves, but Lycoming couldn't get the tying run to cross in the frame.

Junior Kylie Russell (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) (8-3) allowed single runs in the first, third and seventh, tossing a complete game, allowing 11 hits and two walks. She struck out five in her sixth straight win and complete game.

Erin Kreis (3-9) took the loss for the Ducks (13-15 overall, 5-5 MAC Freedom), allowing four hits and four runs in five innings.

Wetzel led the Warriors, going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI, Segraves scored three runs and both DeWolfe and Sobieski each scored twice. Sobieski, Eiswerth and Russell each had two RBI.

Jessica Guerrero was 2-for-4 with a run and Meg Halloran went 2-for-3 with two runs for the Ducks.

In the first game, Stevens used four first-inning runs en route to a 6-2 win. Segraves led the team, going 2-for-3 with two runs and Sobieski went 2-for-2 as well.

The Warriors broke onto the scoreboard in the fourth inning, as Segraves led off the inning with an infield single, stole second, moved to third on a flyout and scored on a groundout, helping the Warriors close within five runs after the Ducks scored four in the first and one in the third.

In the sixth, the Warriors got started when Segraves had another infield single to leadoff. After two popouts and a hit batter, sophomore Rachel Daub (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale Area) drove her in with a single to right field.

Guerrero went 2-for-4 with a double and a run and Halloran went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI to lead the Ducks.

Ella Tozduman (7-5) earned the win for the Ducks, allowing six hits and two earned runs. She struck out three. Senior Payton Whary (5-3) allowed two earned runs and three hits in 1 1/3 innings. She struck out two.
