Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Zimmerman scores five as Warriors roll past Allegheny, 12-8

MEADVILLE, Pa. – Senior Owen Zimmerman (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) scored a season-high five goals to lead the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team, as it notched its first win of the season, at Allegheny College, 12-8, in a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon, March 4, at Fuhrer Field.

Zimmerman scored his second hat trick of the season, picking up four ground balls, as he moved past his former teammate, Dominick Massaro '22, into 12th on the school's all-time goals list, finishing the contest with 106 in his career, just five shy of the top 10 in program history.

Sophomore Troy Scozzafava (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) scored twice and added two assists. Senior Joe Corozzo (Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore), sophomore Sean Farrell (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic), junior Patrick Dwyer (Somerville, N.J./Immaculata), junior Max Anderson (Harrisburg, Pa./Homeschooled), and sophomore Joey Hoover (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) all put up a single goal.

Senior Josh Hall (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) led the Warriors (1-3 overall) with eight groundball pickups while sophomore Jakob Switzer (West Pittston, Pa./Wyoming Area) finished with a team-high three caused turnovers. Sophomore Ryan Farrell (Swedesboro, N.J./Archmere Academy) won 11 faceoffs.

Allegheny (2-1 overall) opened the scoring but Scozzafava tied it up as Dwyer found him just outside the top of the crease midway through the first, setting up some Warrior fireworks. Zimmerman scored unassisted three times in a row to finish a hat trick in the first quarter, his first at 3:25 from outside the goal crease, his second at 2:41 after running it in from midfield, scoring as he was tripped up, and the third with 37-seconds remaining to put the team up 4-1.

Scozzafava came through with another tie-breaking goal after the Gators were able to score three to tie the game at four, going top shelf with 4:00 left in the first half with Corozzo earning the assist. A groundball pickup by Max Anderson led to Hoover's goal at 2:49 as Anderson found Hoover in front of the goal.

Zimmerman's fourth goal at 14:22 in the third was assisted by Dwyer again as Zimmerman's shot came from outside the left goal post after Farrell won the faceoff at midfield. After carrying the ball from midfield, Anderson found the back of the net after a trip around the back of the Gators' goal. Dwyer tallied on a man-up opportunity for the Warriors as Hoover got the groundball off Anderson's initial shot.

The Warriors, short-handed, scored again with 8:56 left in the final quarter, as Corozzo fired after a one-two effort from Scozzafava with the Warriors running the field. Zimmerman's final goal came on an underhanded shot. The Warriors scored short-handed again with four minutes remaining in regulation, as Sean Farrell fired it in from the right post.

The Gators were led by Gideon Sullivan with four goals and five ground balls.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ben Franco (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) earned his first win of the year, making 15 saves. Eric Mirkovich for the Gators made seven saves on 19 shots.

The Warriors return home to UPMC Field on Wednesday, March 8, for a 5 p.m. matchup against Keuka College.
