Warriors open MAC Freedom action with nail-biter over DeSales

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Sophomore Katie Maguire (Garnerville, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) led the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team with six goals, crossing the 30-goal mark of the season in a 17-16 nail-biting win at DeSales University to open MAC Freedom play on Wednesday, March 29, at the DeSales Turf Field.

Maguire, with 31 goals this year, is 11 goals away from the 100-career goal threshold, as she also tallied an assist, three ground balls, a caused turnover, and won five draws. First-year Riley Block (Hopatcong, N.J./Morris Catholic) posted five goals, an assist, two ground balls, caused a turnover, and won five draws. Sophomore Alexa Baldwin (Bel Air, Md./Hereford Tech) scored twice, and added a team-leading three assists. Sophomore Kailey Stocker (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) posted two goals, two assists, a ground ball, and caused a turnover and junior Riley Cranmer (Butler, Pa./Butler Area) notched two goals, two caused turnovers, and won a draw.

Cranmer scored the Warriors' lone goal in the first quarter, scoring off a ground ball pickup by Stocker, before a high shot sent the ball up and over the shoulder of the goalkeeper. Marina Bradley tied the game at one for the Bulldogs (3-7 overall, 0-1 MAC Freedom) later in the quarter.

A free position goal by Maguire tied the game at two, but Maguire gave the Warriors (4-4 overall, 1-0 MAC Freedom) the lead with a shot just outside the crease a minute later. Block found the back of the cage from the right side of the arc and Baldwin's first goal came on a high shot from the right post to put the Warriors up by two. Stocker, with 35-seconds left in the half, got her shot past the goalkeeper from the top of the crease to enter the half up, 8-5.

Coming around the back of the cage, Baldwin was able to maintain possession for the Warriors for another top-shelf goal. The Bulldogs put up five goals to take a one-goal lead before Block struck again on a man-up chance, tying the game at 10 on a short pass by Maguire. Block, winning the draw, was able to run the ball into the Bulldogs' zone, regaining the ball from Baldwin for a shot from the left post. The Bulldogs, though, scored another three goals to gain the lead by three before Lycoming rallied again.

Block struck for her third goal in a row with 12:24 left in the fourth, a hard shot from the right side of the goal. Stocker brought the Warriors within one, on an assist from Baldwin, before Maguire was able to tie the game on another man-up opportunity. Maguire scored twice more in a row, allowing Cranmer to get the game-winning free-position opportunity in the 17-16 victory.

Meagan Landers and Marina Bradley led the Bulldogs with four goals each, as Landers added an assist and two ground balls, three draw wins, and Bradley also posted three assists, three ground balls, and two draw wins.

Junior goalkeeper Zoe Stauffer (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) earned the win, making 13 saves on 39 shots. Michaela Regan made four saves.

The Warriors return to the field on Wednesday, April 5, when they host Delaware Valley University in MAC Freedom action at 6 p.m. at UPMC Field.
