Game Recap: Softball |

Warriors improve to 4-0 in conference with sweep of FDU

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior Rachel DeWolfe (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Crest) hit a walk-off homer in game one and first-year Claire Alexander (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) tied the Lycoming College softball record with two homers in game two to lead Lycoming to a MAC Freedom sweep of FDU-Florham, 2-1 and 7-0, on Tuesday, March 28, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.

The Warriors improved to 10-4 overall and 4-0 in the MAC Freedom, as they are the only undefeated team left in the conference. The 10 wins already surpasses the team's 2022 total and the four wins to open conference play marks the team's best start in league play since 2000, when the Warriors were members of the Freedom League (a precursor to the MAC Freedom).

The Warriors fell behind in the first game due to an unearned run in the third inning, but senior Morgan Wetzel (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) tied the game with a long homer in the bottom of the fourth, her 99th career hit.

Sophomore Avery Eiswerth (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) (3-0) came on in relief in the fifth inning and got out of a bases loaded, one-out jam without allowing a run. She allowed two hits in the next two innings, but kept the Devils (7-6 overall, 0-4 MAC Freedom) from reaching third base.

DeWolfe ended the game leading off the seventh, drilling a homer of the left field fence before being greeted at home by her team.

Senior Payton Whary (Coal Township, Pa./Shamokin Area) allowed six hits and an unearned run in 4 1/3 innings as the starter. She walked one and struck out three. Ciara Hoffman (3-3) took the loss, allowing three hits and two runs in six-plus innings. She walked one and struck out nine.

Kacie Centineo and Kristina Pelano led the Devils with two hits each.

Alexander went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI to lead the Warriors in the second game, junior Kylie Segraves (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) went 2-for-3 with two runs, Wetzel went 2-for-3 with a run and RBI and sophomore Rachel Daub (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale Area) went 2-for-3 with a RBI to pace Lycoming's 14-hit attack in the 7-0 win in the second game.

Junior Kylie Russell (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) (3-3) threw a three-hit shutout, walking two and striking out nine Devils in the win.

Alexander led off the game with a homer to left before Segraves reached on an error. Wetzel singled through the left side for her 100th career hit, becoming the 17th Warrior to reach the milestone, and DeWolfe singled down the right-field line to load the bases. Daub followed with a single into right-center to drive in Segraves.

In the second, a leadoff walk was followed by a one-out homer to left-center by Alexander. In the fourth, Segraves singled before Wetzel doubled into the left-center field gap to score Segraves. DeWolfe reached on an error and then was caught stealing, but that allowed Wetzel to score on the double steal to make it 6-0.

In the sixth, first-year Kelly Preston (Boonton, N.J./Mountain Lakes) got her first collegiate hit, a double down the line before senior Madalyn Bechdel (Beach Creek, Pa./Central Mountain) singled her in through the left side.

Bianca Disanto (1-3) was charged with the loss, allowing six hits and three earned runs in the first two innings for the Devils.

The Warriors get back into action on Wednesday, March 29, when they host Albright College in non-conference action at 3 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
