Warriors sweep Bulldogs to open MAC Freedom play

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – First-year Claire Alexander (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) had three hits, three runs, her first career homer and two RBI to lead the Lycoming College softball team in a sweep of MAC Freedom opponent DeSales University, winning the first game, 9-1 in five innings, before taking the second, 3-1, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on Sunday, March 26.

In the first game, senior Payton Whary (Coal Township, Pa./Shamokin Area) (4-1) tossed a complete-game two hitter, striking out five and walking three, while the Warrior bats scored nine runs in their last three at bats to post the run-rule 9-1 win.

In the second game, sophomore Avery Eiswerth (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) (2-0) threw 5 1/3 innings, allowing six hits, two walks and a run before yielding to junior Kylie Russell (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area), who earned the save, allowing a hit and striking out two over the last five outs.

After the Bulldogs scored an unearned run in the first inning of the first game, the Warriors took the lead in the third inning, as Alexander started the rally by legging out an infield single to lead off the inning. A wild pitch moved her to second before a throwing error on a sac bunt allowed her to tie the game at one. Junior Kylie Segraves (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) moved to second on a passed ball and with one out, she took third on a single to right from sophomore Rachel Daub (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale Area) and then scored on a successful double steal.

In the fourth, first-year Kristen George (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) reached on a wild pitch after striking out before scoring on Alexander's homer, a high shot over the left field fence.
In the fifth, the Warriors got started when first-year Hailee Sobieski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Catholic) singled to lead off. After a fielder's choice, George posted an infield single and senior Kaleigh Kinley (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) walked before a wild pitch scored Eiswerth. Segraves delivered an RBI single with one out, before another passed ball allowed Kinley to score. Senior Morgan Wetzel (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) walked, setting up a game-ending error that scored two runs for the Warriors.

Alexander went 2-for-4 with two runs, a homer and two RBI and Segraves went 2-for-2 with two runs and a RBI to lead the Warriors. George also went 2-for-3 with two runs and Sobieski went 2-for-3.

Nicole Secara and Kylie Bryant had the two hits for DeSales. Rachel Lowry (5-2) took the loss, allowing three earned runs and five hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Lycoming scored the first three runs in the second game before holding on late for the 3-1 win.

Alexander led off the game with a double into shallow center field before taking third on a sac bunt that didn't yield an out, then scored when Segraves stole second to kick off a double steal.

In the third, Wetzel got the rally started with a hard liner off the third baseman's glove to reach before a throwing error on a fielder's choice allowed Daub to take second while Wetzel moved to third. Junior Rachel DeWolfe (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) delivered a single up the middle to bring in Wetzel and a fielder's choice scored Daub.

DeSales rallied in the sixth, scoring a run and putting runners on first and second with one out, but Russell got a groundout and a strikeout to end the threat. In the seventh, the Bulldogs again got the tying run to the plate, but a pair of groundouts ended the game.

Kayleigh Ferraro led the Bulldogs, going 2-for-4 with a run and a double. Alanna Hartzell (3-2) took the loss, allowing six hits and no earned runs in the complete game. She struck out four.

The Warriors get back on the field on Tuesday, March 28, when they host FDU-Florham at 3 p.m. in another MAC doubleheader.
