Warriors grind past Delaware Valley, 56-44

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Rolling out 13 straight points to start the game and shooting 42 percent from downtown, the Lycoming College men's basketball team ground out a 56-44 MAC Freedom win over Delaware Valley University on Saturday, Feb. 4, at Lamade Gym on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 4.

The win helped the Warriors (13-8 overall, 8-4 MAC Freedom) drop their magic number to three to clinch a spot in the MAC Freedom Championship and they kept a one-game lead on second-place in the league with three games remaining.

Senior Dyson Harward (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) led the way with 20 points and 22 rebounds, the most in a game for the Warriors since Kevin Rutherford grabbed 24 against Delaware Valley in 1999 and the fifth-most in program history. First-year Isaiah Valentine (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) added 14 points and senior Mo Terry (Severn, Md./Severn School) notched 11 points, four rebounds and three assists, as all three hit three 3-pointers in the contest.

Harward also moved within 12 rebounds of becoming just the sixth player in program history to reach 800 career rebounds and the first since Bill Conroy grabbed 933 in 1978. He needs six points to become the 28th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points.

After senior Deaundre Manuel (Brooklyn, N.Y./KIPP NYC Prep) opened the scoring with a free throw, Harward hit all three of his 3-pointers and sophomore Steven Hamilton (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area) capped the run with another trey, making it 13-0 just 4:28 into the game.

The Aggies (10-11 overall, 5-7 MAC Commonwealth) closed within 10 three times more in the first half, but Lycoming used another nine point run which featured a four-point play from Terry to lead 28-10 with 7:32 left. The Aggies cut that down to 12 with 2:07 left in the period, but a trey from Valentine and a floater from junior Brendon Blackson (Laurel, Md./Laurel) gave Lycoming a 37-20 lead at the break.

Lycoming shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, but shot just 23 percent in the second half (5-of-22), helping the Aggies cut a 21-point Warrior' lead (43-22) to just six with 5:53 left (45-39). Lycoming hit 3-of-4 at the line starting a run of nine straight points, capped by a 3-pointer from Terry that made it 53-39 with 1:24 left to clinch the win.

Justin Savage led the Aggies with 16 points and Godly Marc added nine points and four steals, as Delaware Valley shot just 27 percent (15-of-56) from the field in the game.

The Warriors get back on the court on Wednesday, Feb. 8, when they head to King's (Pa.) to kick off a MAC Freedom doubleheader at 6 p.m. The women will play in the nightcap at 8 p.m.
