WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Back-to-back layups from junior Alicia Goldenziel (Moscow, Pa./North Pocono) and junior Meghan Dufner (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills Regional) with less than 40 seconds left in double overtime helped lift the Lycoming College women's basketball team to a double overtime, 96-89, win over Mount Aloysius College at Lamade Gym to open the season on Wednesday, Nov. 8.
After the Mounties (0-1 overall) closed within two points with 30 seconds left in the second overtime, Goldenziel got a pass inside from senior Emily Lockard (Benton, Pa./Benton Area) for an easy layup and a steal by sophomore Kami Abdo (Pottsville, Pa./Nativity BVM) set up the layup by Dufner, as Lycoming (1-0 overall) closed the game on a 7-2 run.
After the Mounties hit a 3-pointer to open the overtime, Lycoming responded with six straight points and held that lead until the free throws by Angelina Kohlwaives made it 89-87 with 46 seconds left.
In the first overtime, the Warriors fell behind by seven in the period's first two minutes before closing the period on a 10-3 run, with Lockard hitting a spinning layup with four seconds left to send it to the second extra period.
Tied at 48 heading into the fourth quarter, neither team led by more than three in the final 10 minutes. Junior Mya Wetzel (Frackville, Pa./North Schuylkill) hit three 3-pointers in the period, her last putting the Warriors up 71-68 with 11 seconds left, but Annalyn Isaacs answered with a three of her own to send the game to overtime.
The game featured 11 lead changes and 10 ties, with Mount Aloysius leading by 11 in the first quarter before the Warriors came back to lead 30-27 at halftime.
Dufner had a career-high 24 points to go with six assists and six steals to lead six Warriors in double figures. Abdo had 17 points and a career-high six steals. Lockard and Wetzel both had 16, with Lockard posting eight rebounds and three assists and Wetzel hitting five 3-pointers and adding five rebounds and five assists. Goldenziel finished with 12 points, six rebounds, four steals and three blocks and junior Ashley Yoh (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County) added 11 points, nine rebounds, a game-high seven assists and four steals.
Angelina Kohlwaies had 19 points for her the Mounties, hitting four 3-pointers. Isaacs, Jade Love-Morris and Chloe Clemons each had 18 and Molly Kosmack had 16 points and 18 rebounds.
The Warriors will be back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at Penn State-Altoona, with tip-off at 6 p.m.
