Warriors keep hold on first with 2-1 win over Drew

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior Kenny Clapp (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) found the left side of the net in the 70th minute to help keep the Lycoming College men's soccer team at the top of the Landmark Conference standings heading into the regular season's final week, as the team downed Drew University, 2-1, in conference action at UPMC Field on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 21.
Tied at one in the 70th minute, the Warriors (10-3-4 overall, 7-0-1 Landmark) drew a free kick about 30 yards out in the middle of the field. Senior Dylan Sloan (Essex, Md./ Archbishop Curley) placed a quick dribbler to the top right corner of the box for senior Kenny Clapp (Baltimore, Md./ Archbishop Curley), who was charging downfield before one-timing the shot in the left side netting.
Lycoming stays two points ahead of Catholic with 22 points in the Landmark Conference standings heading into the final set of games on Saturday, Oct. 28, as Lycoming will travel to third-place Elizabethtown for a key matchup. The Warriors have clinched no worse than a No. 2 seed in the six-team conference championship tournament.
Lycoming's other goal came just 20 minutes in, as senior Joe Bamfo (Lake Grove, N.Y./ Connetquot) on a one-timer in the middle of the penalty area off an assist from junior Owen Magee (Selinsgrove, Pa./ Selinsgrove Area), as Bamfo ended a 15-game scoreless streak by placing the ball in the bottom left of the netting for his ninth career goal.
Before going into halftime, Drew (8-6-2 overall, 4-4 Landmark) was able to capitalize tie the game with a hard shot from Kevin Kiernan.
Senior Nick Wilke (Mercerville, N.J./Notre Dame) stopped five shots to earn the win and Drew goalkeeper Brandon Jachera made two saves.
The Warriors are back in action on UPMC Field, on Tuesday, Oct. 24, in a non-conference game against Gettysburg College at 7 p.m.
