Warriors outlast Aggies in five for MAC Freedom win

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – Sophomore Kendall Myers (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) recorded a career-high 40 digs and sophomore Marykatelin Button (Avon, N.Y./Avon) posted 30 assists and 13 digs for her first career double-double to lead the Lycoming College volleyball team to a 3-2 (15-25, 25-15, 25-21, 21-25, 15-10) MAC Freedom win over Delaware Valley University on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at James Work Gymnasium.

First-year Cameron Upcraft (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley) notched 10 kills to lead the team to go with nine blocks and sophomore Arianna Santos (Oxford, Pa./Oxford Area) added nine digs, a career-high 16 digs and seven blocks. Senior Elizabeth Kelson (Denville, N.J./Morris Catholic) added nine kills and three blocks and sophomore Brynne Bisel (Julian, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) posted seven kills and 11 digs.

The Warriors (7-1 overall, 1-1 MAC Freedom) used a gritty defense that racked up 13 blocks, just five receiving errors and 89 digs to grit out the win over the Aggies (3-2 overall, 1-1 MAC Freedom), who had three blocks, 10 receiving errors and 85 digs.

Tied at eight in the fifth set, Upcraft notched a kill before a block by Kelson and Bisel keyed a three-point run to make it 11-8. The Aggies cut within two twice more, but the Warriors closed out the game with three more straight points, with Santos finding the floor for the final kill.

The Aggies finished the first set of a 13-3 run, but the Warriors responded in the second set with a 15-5 run to post a 25-15 win. The Warriors fell behind 14-10 and were down 20-18 before a kill by Bisel set up a 7-1 run to end the set and help the team take a 2-1 lead. The Aggies broke a tie at 17 in the fourth set with an 8-3 run to set up the dramatic end.

The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Sept. 17, when they host Penn State-Berks (11 a.m.) and Wilson (3 p.m.) in a tri-match at Lamade Gym.
