Warriors fall to Stevens

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Three Lycoming College softball players had a hit in each end of Sunday, April 3's MAC Freedom doubleheader against Stevens Institute of Technology at the Shangraw Athletic Complex, but Stevens posted a 6-3 win in game one and a 9-2 win in game two.

Senior Kacee Reitz (Milton, Pa./Milton Area), first-year Rachel Daub (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale Area) and senior Angie King (Cooperstown, Pa./Maplewood) posted six of Lycoming's 10 hits in the doubleheader, notching one hit a piece in each game.

The Warriors (4-12 overall, 0-4 MAC Freedom) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first game, as Reitz led off by being hit by a pitch. After a sac bunt, she scored on a two-out single to center field from Daub. A walk and a hit batter then loaded the bases for King, who delivered a two-RBI double that one-hopped the left field fence.

The Ducks (5-9 overall, 3-1 MAC Freedom) got two runs in the second, taking advantage of three hits and an error and then took the lead in the fifth with a four-run frame, with Caroline Yahn giving the Ducks the lead with a two-out single.

Siobhan Cottell led the Ducks, going 2-for-4 with two runs and a RBI and Rachael Prescott and Meg Halloran each had two hits and a RBI.

Junior Payton Whary (Coal Township, Pa./Shamokin Area) (2-4) took the loss, allowing eight hits and five earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. Sophomore Kylie Russell (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) allowed a hit and walk, but no runs in five outs of relief.

Erin Kreis (2-4) earned the win, allowing three hits, three runs and three walks. She struck out three.

In the second game, Julia Baber posted a double, triple and home run, driving in five to propel the Ducks to a 9-2 win.

Baber's three-run homer highlighted a four-run top of the second, but the Warriors got back into the game with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Senior Morgan Klosko (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) led off with a single before King singled with one out, setting up sophomore Rachel DeWolfe (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff), who singled to center before both runners scored when the ball got past the outfielder.

Lycoming loaded the bases in the fifth, but Stevens broke open the game in the sixth thanks to two RBI doubles from Baber and Jessica Guerrero.

Guerrero finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and Meg Halloran, Cottell and Rachael Prescott each had two hits.

Kaitlin Smith (3-4) earned the win, allowing seven hits and no earned runs. She walked two. First-year Avery Eiswerth (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) (2-4) allowed five earned runs in 5 1/3 innings. King allowed one hit while getting the last five outs.

The Warriors get back on the field on Tuesday, April 5, when they head to Albright College for a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
