WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – First-year
Rachel Daub (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) had a hit in each game and junior
Payton Whary (Coal Township, Pa./Shamokin Area) tossed a six-hitter in the second game for the Lycoming College softball team, which fell to King's College in a MAC Freedom doubleheader, 11-1 and 2-0, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on Thursday afternoon, April 21.
Whary (3-7) locked with Emily Novicki (7-2) in a pitchers' duel in the second game, as neither pitcher gave up a run until the sixth inning in the 2-0 Monarchs' win.
Whary allowed just a hit and two walks through the first five innings, retiring 13 in a row until Kiersten Krouse singled to right field with one out in the sixth. After a flyout, Bailey Loyack drove in Krouse with a double to right center. In the seventh, three hits from the Monarchs (16-7 overall, 7-3 MAC Freedom) helped them plate one more run.
The Warriors (6-20 overall, 1-9 MAC Freedom) had runners on second and third with no outs in the fourth, but a groundout and pair of flyouts ended the threat. Lycoming did have the tying run reach in the seventh, as well, after a walk, but a strikeout ended the game.
Novicki allowed five hits and two walks, striking out five in her second shutout.
King's used four-run innings in the fourth and sixth innings to break away from the Warriors in the first game, winning 11-1 in six innings.
After King's scored a run in the first inning, the Warriors countered, as junior
Kylie Russell (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) walked with one out before an error put runners on first and third. Junior
Morgan Wetzel (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) was hit by a pitch to load the bases and a fielder's choice tied the game.
King's took the lead with two runs in the third off a double from Molly Gillette, before the two four-run innings broke open the game.
Lindsey Leppo and Loyack each scored three runs and Gillette drove in three to lead the Monarchs. Loyack also hit a homer.
Russell (1-5) allowed six earned runs and nine hits in four innings for the Warriors. She struck out one.
Brandi McIntosh (8-3) earned the win, allowing two hits and no earned runs. She walked two and struck out one.
The Warriors get back in action with a non-conference doubleheader at Lebanon Valley College on Saturday, April 23.
