Maguire, Boyer lead Warriors against Knights

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – First-year Katie Maguire (Garnerville, Pa./Albertus Magnus) scored twice in the last 64 seconds and nearly got a third as the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team tried for a valiant comeback, but came up just short, 16-14, against Arcadia University in MAC Freedom action at UPMC Field on Saturday afternoon, April 2.

Down 16-12 as the clock neared a minute to go, Maguire got an underhanded pass from senior Rorie Bass Foresman (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) inside the arc and Maguire found the back of the net. She won the ensuing draw control and used a pick to get free in the arc for a goal with 50 seconds left to make it a two-goal game.

She won the following draw while getting fouled and then drew a free-position attempt with 21 seconds left, but couldn't find the net with her shot and Arcadia (5-6 overall, 2-0 MAC Freedom) was able to hold off the late charge in the waning seconds.

Maguire and senior Erika Boyer (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) each had four goals to lead the Warriors (4-6 overall, 0-2 MAC Freedom), with Maguire adding a career-best nine draw controls. Junior Tess Arnold (Elmira, N.Y./Elmira) added her first career hat trick to go with four groundballs and two caused turnovers.

Both teams posted three goals in the first quarter, with Arcadia taking a 3-1 lead before senior Emma Lehr (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) and Arnold rallied with goals to tie it. In the second quarter, Arcadia scored the first two goals before the Warriors scored four of the last five, with Arnold scoring in transition as time expired to give Lycoming a 7-6 halftime lead.

Arcadia, however, used a 10-4 run in the second half's first 22 minutes to lead 15-10 before Lycoming scored four of the last five goals to make up the final two-goal deficit.

Maddie Ruger led the Knights with five goals and an assist and Ashley Starkey, Olivia Poley and Skylar Acker each had three goals and an assist. Acker, Starkey and Ruger each added six draw controls.

In net, sophomore Zoe Stauffer (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) posted nine saves for the Warriors. Arcadia keeper Emily Griffith stopped 13 shots for the Knights.

The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, April 6, when they head to King's (Pa.) for a 3:30 p.m. MAC Freedom game.
