Five in double figures as Warriors outlast John Jay, 81-72

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Seniors DeAundre Manuel (Brooklyn, N.Y./KIPP NYC Prep) and Dyson Harward (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) each posted double-doubles to lead a group of five Lycoming College men's basketball players in double figures to lead Lycoming to an 81-72 win over John Jay College on Saturday, Nov. 12, at Lamade Gym in the finale of the Crosstown Challenge.

Manuel led the Warriors (2-0 overall) with 18 points and 12 rebounds, going 8-of-11 from the field, and reaching 300 career rebounds in the process, as he was named to the Crosstown Challenge All-Classic Team after averaging 12.0 points and 11.5 rebounds in the tournament. Harward added 13 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks for his 26th career double-double.

Senior Mo Terry (Severn, Md./Severn School) posted 15 points and five rebounds, crossing 700 career points in the game, and first-year Isaiah Valentine (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) had 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Junior Steven Hamilton (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) added 10 points and junior Brendon Blackson (Laurel, Md./Laurel) added nine points and three steals.

The Warriors shot 45 percent in the game (32-of-71) and held the Bloodhounds (0-4 overall) to 32 percent (19-of-59), but a 28-of-34 performance at the free throw line for John Jay helped negate a 47-31 rebounding advantage for the Warriors, who also scored 54 points in the paint in the contest.

After the score was tied at seven early in the game, the Warriors went on a 12-2 run to take a 19-9 lead after a driving layup from Terry. The lead grew to 13 off a 3-pointer from Valentine with 9:53 left in the half, but John Jay closed within five with 3:53 left. Lycoming led 41-32 at the half, though, as Lycoming held John Jay to 27 percent (7-of-26) shooting in the half.

The Bloodhounds weren't able to get closer than four in the first 13 minutes of the second half, finally getting with 64-60 and then getting the lead to three at 75-72 with 2:19 left after a layup from G Watkins. They had a 3-point shot to tie that was missed and Manuel helped ice the game with a dunk off a dish from Valentine with 32 seconds left, as Lycoming finished the final seconds on a 6-0 run.

Isaac Holmes posted 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists, earning a spot on the All-Classic Team for the Bloodhounds. Bleron Lata had 15 points, Corey Jones Jr. added 13 and Jamir Stewart had 12 points and seven rebounds.

The Warriors get back in the gym on Wednesday, Nov. 16, when they host Penn College at 7 p.m. in Lamade Gym.
