Warriors shut down Colonels

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Coming off her first MAC Freedom Player of the Week nod, senior Bridget Maaloum (Lynbrook, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) notched a goal in the third straight game to seal the Lycoming College women's soccer team's 2-0 shutout of Wilkes University in MAC Freedom action on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at UPMC Field.

The win snapped a 22-year winless drought against the Colonels (2-8-1 overall, 0-2 MAC Freedom), a stretch of eight games (0-6-2), with the team's last win coming in a 2-1 affair in Wilkes-Barre in 1999.

First-year Aubrey Williamson (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) found the back of the net first for the Warriors (8-2-2 overall, 2-0 MAC Freedom) at 15:55 in the first half, as a pass from first-year Abigail Umhoefer (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) at midfield gave Williamson a 1-v-1 breakaway before she beat the last defender and fired into the right corner.

Maaloum sealed the victory for the Warriors with four minutes remaining in the game, catching the corner kick from first-year Claudia Green (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) for a header into the upper 90. Maaloum became the 17th player in program history to reach 30 career points in the process, having posted nine goals and 13 assists in her career.

Sophomore goalkeeper Abbey Gerasimoff (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) finished with six saves for her fourth shutout of the season. Colonels' goalkeeper Hannah Landis recorded four saves.

The Warriors return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 8, when they face Arcadia University for a 5:30 p.m. MAC Freedom matchup in Glenside, Pa.
