Warriors fall victim to Mustangs’ rally

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Sophomore Billy Coppock (Collingdale, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) caught a 38-yard touchdown pass for the Lycoming College football team to kick off the third quarter, but Stevenson University scored the last 24 points of the game in a 24-10 Middle Atlantic Conference win at David Person Field on Saturday, Oct. 15.

Coppock's score capped a seven-play, 75-yard drive to start the second half to give Lycoming a 10-0 lead. Sophomore Heath Jones (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) rushed for 16 yards and then picked up 11 more to get it to the Stevenson 40. On 3-and-8, junior Hunter Shearer (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) found Coppock down the right sideline behind the defense.

The Mustangs rallied with a nine-play, 73-yard drive to make it a three-point contest before two interceptions and a fumble set up their last three scoring drives.

The Warriors had the only scoring drive in the first half, taking a 3-0 lead into the locker room off a 36-yard field goal from junior Ian Plankenhorn (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area). The field goal attempt was set in motion after sophomore Joey Rivituso (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame-Green Pond) picked off a pass at the Stevenson 29 with 4:57 left in the first quarter.

Stevenson had three drives end in the red zone in the first quarter, with the Warriors turning them away without any points each time. In the second half, Stevenson got the ball on Lycoming's half of the field five times, scoring on three of those drives.

Down 24-10 in the fourth quarter, the Warriors were on the verge of making it closer, as senior Elijah Shemory (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) found first-year running back Ryan Pentz (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) on a wheel route for a 51-yard score before a holding penalty nullified the score.

Jones ran 11 times for 53 yards and Shearer led a group of three quarterbacks, going 5-for-12 for 72 yards and a touchdown. He was intercepted once. Coppock caught two passes for 48 yards and junior Brandon Timothy (Woodland Park, N.J./Passaic Valley) had two catches for 23 yards.

Junior Johnny Day (Reading, Pa./Antietam) and Rivituso each had a career-best 11 tackles. Rivituso also had a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery and an interception. Junior Kevin Gianoni (Quakertown, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) added nine tackles, three for loss and senior Stephon Payne (Bronx, N.Y./Hudson Catholic) posted seven tackles, 1.5 for loss. Senior Austin Rowley (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley), junior Hunter Campbell (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) and sophomore Jake Welch (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) each had nine tackles. Senior David Tomb (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) posted eight tackles and a half sack and Campbell also had a half sack as well as a fumble recovery and a breakup.

Braxton Harsley led the Mustangs with 28 carries for 59 yards and a touchdown. Ryan Sedgwick went 24-of-33 for 216 yards, an interception and a touchdown. Emmanual Ekop caught seven passes for 73 yards and a score.
