WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Sophomore
Heath Jones (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) and senior
Elijah Shemory (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) each scored second-half touchdowns to lead the Lycoming College football team, storming back into the game after facing an 18-point deficit, but two fourth-quarter drives stalled helping King's College post a 28-23 win at David Person Field on Saturday, Oct. 1.
Â
Down 28-10 late in the third quarter, the Warriors (2-2 overall, 1-1 MAC) rallied with scores on two consecutive drives. After a 12-play drive fizzled out with an interception, sophomore
Jake Welch (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) forced a fumble and picked it up at the King's 15-yard line with 1:01 left in the third quarter.
Â
On 4-and-4, Shemory tossed a screen to Jones, who crashed in from eight yards out, finding the right pylon to make it 28-17 as the third quarter came to a close. After a three-and-out, the Warriors got the ball at the King's 48 and embarked on a nine-play, 48-yard drive that was helped along by an 18-yard reception by freshman
Brody Rhodes (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro Area) before Shemory crashed in from five yards out. A failed two-point conversion made it 28-23 with 9:17 left.
Â
The Monarchs (3-1 overall, 2-1 MAC) responded with a 15-play drive that ate 7:41, but when it appeared the Monarchs might be able to hold the ball the rest of the game or punch it in for more points, Welch forced another fumble that senior
Austin Rowley (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) fell on at the 14. The Warriors got the ball to the 25 before the drive stalled, and got the ball back again with 32 seconds left, but four incomplete passes from inside their 20 ended the last Warrior threat.
Â
Lycoming forced five turnovers in the game, with Rowley posting two interceptions and a fumble recover to lead that effort. Junior
Hunter Campbell (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) had 13 tackles and a fumble recover and Welch finished with nine tackles, two forced fumbles and a recovery. Senior
Cole Senior (Middletown, Pa./Middletown Area) posted 13 tackles, 3.5 for loss and 2.5 sacks.
Â
Jones rushed 11 times for 46 yards and caught his third touchdown pass of the year. Shemory finished 18-of-47 for 185 yards and two touchdowns. He was intercepted twice. Junior
Brandon Timothy (Woodland Park, N.J./Passaic Valley) caught seven passes for 71 yards and a score to lead the receivers.
Â
The Warriors made use of a short field set up by a 24-yard punt return from Rowley to get on the board first with a 39-yard field goal from junior
Ian Plankenhorn (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area). King's responded with 21 straight points, scoring on three big pass plays to take a 21-3 lead, but Rowley's second interception got the Warriors the ball at the 48 with 4:42 left in the half, which set up Shemory, who found Timothy over the top for a 23-yard score with 3:18 left to make it 21-10 at the break.
Â
A 12-play, 69-yard drive on King's first possession gave the Monarchs a 28-10 lead, setting up the late comeback.
Â
Tyler Carey caught two passes for 122 yards and a touchdown to lead the Monarchs and Brandon Cohen caught two passes for 49 yards and a score. Tyler Moore finished 12-of-19 for 260 yards and three touchdowns. He was intercepted twice and sacked five times.
Â
Jassiem Lettsome had eight tackles, three for a loss and 1.5 sacks. Joseph Carchio and Alex Tristan intercepted passes.
Â
The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, Oct. 8, when they head to 15
th-ranked Delaware Valley University for a 12 p.m. game.
