Walk-away winners! Warriors score late in 29-28 win at Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – A two-yard touchdown pass to the left corner of the end zone from senior Elijah Shemory (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) to junior Joey Guida (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) with 10 seconds remaining helped the Lycoming College football team walk away with a 29-28 Middle Atlantic Conference win against Stevenson University on Saturday, Sept. 25, at Mustang Stadium.

Down by two with less than five minutes to play, Stevenson (0-4 overall, 0-2 MAC) got the ball at their own 48 after a 15-yard penalty on the punt and on third down, a muffed snap was picked up by Ryan Sedgwick for a 17-yard reception by Steven Smothers to save the drive. Smothers caught his third touchdown with an 8-yard score five plays later to help Stevenson take a 28-23 lead.

The Warriors (3-1 overall, 2-0 MAC) started the ensuing drive with 1:35 left. They moved the ball with three quick passes and short run before a Stevenson personal foul on third-and-3 got the ball to the Stevenson 32-yard line. On fourth-and-10, Shemory escaped a sack and ran 19 yards to the 13-yard line with 19 seconds left. A pass interference call on Guida on a pass to the front corner of the end zone put the ball at the two-yard line with 15 seconds left, setting up the final play, where Guida again went to the front corner of the end zone, making a diving catch to his right.

In a game that featured three second-quarter lead changes, the Warriors forced five turnovers, three on interceptions and two on fumbles, helping to overcome a Stevenson offense that had 374 yards of total offense and secure its first win over the Mustangs since 2014.

Shemory finished 21-of-37 for 249 yards and two touchdowns passing and 15 rushing attempts for 61 yards and a score to lead the Lycoming offense. Senior Tyjah During (Accokeek, Md./Surrattsville) caught two passes for 81 yards and a score and senior Kevin Krawczyk (Dupont, Pa./Pittston Area) caught six passes for 54 yards.

Senior David Tomb (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) had five tackles, three for a loss and a sack and sophomore Coleman Witherite (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) had a career-high eight tackles. Sophomore Hunter Campbell (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) had seven tackles and a fumble recovery and junior Austin Rowley (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) had seven stops and an interception.

Sophomore Ian Plankenhorn (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) connected on three extra points and three field goals, connecting from 37, 27 and a career-best 41 yards out, hitting the upright on a 36-yard attempt.

Lycoming took its first lead after back-to-back interceptions halted both teams' opening drives, with Rowley diving and catching a Stevenson pass near midfield to give the Warriors the ball. Seven plays and 47 yards later, Shemory took a quarterback sneak in to make it 17-14 with 9:53 left in the third quarter.

Stevenson rolled down field on a 12-play, 81-yard drive, but it screeched to a halt when senior Gianni Bryant-Lopez (Delran, N.J./Delran) stayed in front of the Stevenson wide receiver to pick the ball off in the end zone for his third pick of the year. After Lycoming's ensuing drive end with a field goal attempt that hit the upright, Campbell fell on a Stevenson fumble to give Lycoming the ball back inside the 30.

On third-and-10, Shemory pounded out a 14-yard run for a first down, bruising off two defenders to get the ball down to the 13-yard line, setting up a bit of redemption for Plankenhorn, who drilled a 27-yard field goal to make it 20-14 with 10:13 remaining.

Another fumble, this time on a tenacious defensive play, gave Lycoming the ball back at the Stevenson 31-yard line and three plays later, Plankenhorn canned his third field goal of the game from 41 yards out, making it 23-14.

Stevenson cut the lead to two points with 5:54 left with a six-play, 55-yard drive, as Sedgwick found Steven Smothers for his second 11-yard score of the game.

Stevenson opened the scoring with a seven-play, 47-yard drive on its first drive of the day, with Smothers catching a pass in the back of the end zone for an 11-yard score with 11:36 left in the first quarter.

Both defenses played well throughout the half, with Lycoming picking up three sacks and Stevenson posting two, which kept scoring at a minimum. Indeed, Lycoming's score was set up off an interception at midfield by senior Andre Jackson Jr. (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) and a 30-yard return to the Stevenson 18-yard line. Three plays later, Plankenhorn drilled a 37-yard field goal.

Stevenson responded with a six-play, 61-yard drive for a touchdown to make it 14-3. Lycoming, with 1:37 left in the half and facing a third-and-25 after a blindside block penalty, responded with a 69-yard touchdown, thanks to a nice pump fake by Shemory before he unleashed a perfect spiral to During behind the defense, making it 14-10 at the break.

Ryan Sedgwick finished 28-of-38 for 326 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions for the Mustangs. Kevin Joppy posted 17 carries for 53 yards and a score and Smothers caught 12 passes for 143 yards and three touchdowns. Mario McIntyre led the defense with eight tackles, 2.5 for loss and two sacks.

The Warriors get back in action on Saturday, Oct. 2, when they host 10th-ranked Delaware Valley University in a first-place Middle Atlantic Conference showdown as part of Homecoming at 1 p.m. at David Person Field.
