Warriors rally past league-leading Cougars in game two

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Pounding out 15 hits, the Lycoming College softball team came-from-behind thanks to a four-run fourth inning to post a 9-6 win in the nightcap of a doubleheader with MAC Freedom-leading Misericordia University on Saturday, April 10, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex. The Warriors fell in the first game, 4-3, as Misericordia scored the winning run in the fifth inning.

After the Warriors jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second game, Misericordia scored six runs in a row, taking the lead with a four-run top of the fourth inning. In the bottom of the frame, Lycoming went back to work, though, with sophomore Kaleigh Kinley (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) leading off with a walk. After a sacrifice, junior Kacee Reitz (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) singled up the middle to score Kinley and make it 6-5. Sophomore Morgan Wetzel (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) followed with a single down the line and junior Morgan Klosko (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) added a single into right to tie the game. A sac fly gave Lycoming the lead and a double to left-center from freshman Kylie Segraves (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) made it 8-6.

Freshman Kylie Russell (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) shut the door on the Cougars, allowing two fifth-inning hits and just one other runner in the final three innings to close it out. She struck out five of the 12 batters she faced.

The Warriors tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning, as Klosko posted a one-out single, took second on a groundout, third on a single from Segraves and scored on a single from freshman Kylie DeWolfe (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff).

The Warriors jumped out with four runs in the first inning, as Russell and Reitz started the game with singles before Wetzel jacked a three-run homer to the opposite field. Klosko and Gessner followed with singles and a passed ball moved them up a base before DeWolfe walked. Sophomore Mackenzie Glosek (Coal Township, Pa./Shamokin Area) followed with a sac fly for the fourth run.

Misericordia scored single runs in the second and third before getting four in the fourth inning, with Nicole Elliott hitting a two-run homer to make it 6-4, setting up the Warriors' comeback.

Klosko went 4-for-4 with three runs and a RBI and Wetzel went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. Reitz finished 2-for-4 with two runs an a RBI. Segraves and DeWolfe each also had two hits and a RBI, as the 2-through-6 batters went a combined 14-for-22 for seven runs and nine RBI.

Zariah Alvin led the Cougars, going 3-for-4 with a run, a double and two RBI and Nicole Elliott went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.

Sophia DeFabo took the loss for the Cougars, allowing four hits and three runs in three innings.

Lycoming also staged a comeback in the first game from a three-run deficit, but a fifth-inning run from Misericordia helped the Cougars escape with a 4-3 win.

After Misericordia scored three runs in the first inning, the Warriors responded in the bottom of the third. DeWolfe started the frame with a double to left center before she took third on a sac bunt. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, Reitz lifted a sac fly to score the first run before senior Taylor Gessner (Lewisburg, Pa./Meadowbrook Christian) drilled a double that one-hopped the left field wall.

After a walk to start the fifth, Misericordia saw a runner cut down at the plate off a single from Elliott, but an errant throw put Elliott at third with one out and a sac fly by Kaitlin Redling became the deciding run, as the Cougars allowed just one Lycoming runner in the last three innings.

Redling went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI and Amanda Butera also went 2-for-4 with a RBI.

Junior Angie King (Cooperstown, Pa./Maplewood) allowed nine hits and three earned runs. She walked two and struck out one in the loss. Alexa McHugh (8-0) allowed three hits and two walks in a complete game for Misericordia, striking out nine.

The Warriors get back on the field on Sunday, April 11, when they head to Misericordia University to wrap up the MAC Freedom series with another doubleheader at 1 p.m.
