Warriors split twinbill with FDU-Florham

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Sophomore Kaleigh Kinley (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) scored three runs and notched three hits and sophomore Morgan Wetzel (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) also had three hits and three RBI to lead the Lycoming College softball team to a split in a MAC Freedom doubleheader on Saturday, March 27, falling 4-3 in 10 innings in the first game and winning 6-2 in the nightcap at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.

Sophomore Peyton Whary (Coal Township, Pa./Shamokin Area) (3-0) gave up two runs in the first inning, but left 13 FDU-Florham runners stranded, including leaving the bases loaded twice to lead Lycoming (5-3 overall, 5-3 MAC Freedom) to a 6-2 win in the second game.

Whary struck out three and walked two. She forced a groundout to end a bases-loaded threat in both the second and sixth innings.

After the two first-inning runs from the Devils (3-5 overall, 3-5 MAC Freedom), Lycoming batted around in the second inning, scoring four runs. After freshman Kylie Segraves (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) and Kinley led the inning off with walks, a bunt from freshman Rachel DeWolfe (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) to load the bases. Sophomore Madalyn Bechdel (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain) singled up the middle to score one run and an infield single by senior Lydia Yorks (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) tied the game with an infield single. After a groundout for the second out, junior Kacee Reitz (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) singled to left and Wetzel delivered a double to center field to round out the four-run frame.

In the third inning, Kinley and DeWolfe singled before an error helped Kinley score and DeWolfe reach third. A fielder's choice allowed DeWolfe to score the sixth run.

Wetzel went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI and junior Morgan Klosko (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) went 2-for-4. Kinley scored twice and Bechdel went 2-for-3 with a run and RBI.

Taylor Tobey went 3-for-4 with a run and five others had two hits in the contest.

Dolly Garguilo (0-2) took the loss for the Devils, allowing 11 hits and four earned runs in six innings. She walked three and struck out one.

A 10th-inning triple from Kristina Pelano helped FDU-Florham's international tiebreaker runner come around to score and make up the margin in a 4-3 win in the first game.

The Warriors got on the board first, with freshman Kylie Russell (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a walk and scored on a single up the middle by Wetzel.

The Devils scored twice in the top of the fourth and in the fifth, the Warriors tied it thanks to Kinley, who singled, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Reitz through the right side.

FDU-Florham got an unearned run in the top of the seventh, but Lycoming responded when Yorks had a pinch-hit single before back-to-back walks loaded the bases before a sac fly from Reitz helped Lycoming tie it at three.

Lycoming had a runner reach second in each of the next two innings and the international tiebreaker runner reached third in the 10th, but a two infield popups and a grounder to the pitcher ended the threat.

Kinley led the Warriors, going 2-for-3 with a run, and Reitz posted two RBI.

Ciara Hoffman led the Devils, going 10 innings and allowing eight hits and three runs. She struck out six and walked four. Russell (2-1) allowed two hits in 6 2/3 innings, allowing two unearned runs in the loss. She walked one and struck out four.

The Warriors get back on the field on Friday, April 2, when they host Messiah College at 2 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
