Warriors fall to Falcons

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Lycoming College softball team fell to Messiah College, 1-0 and 5-1, in a non-conference doubleheader at the Starry Athletic Complex on Saturday, April 3.
 
Junior Morgan Klosko (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) went 2-for-3 in the second game to lead the Warriors (5-5 overall), but Messiah (6-6 overall) scored the game's last five runs in a 5-1 win.
 
The Warriors took the lead in the top of the first inning, as freshman Kylie Russell (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) led off with a single and score on a two-out double to deep center field by sophomore Morgan Wetzel (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain).
 
Messiah took the lead with two runs in the third before scoring a single run in the fifth and two in the sixth.
 
Paige Eakes went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI and Olivia Denmark went 2-for-2 with a run and RBI to lead the Falcons.
 
Sophomore Payton Whary (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) tossed 4 2/3 innings, allowing three hits, three walks and two earned runs in the loss. Brynne Baker allowed six hits and a walk while striking out six in the complete-game win for the Falcons.
 
In the first game, junior Angie King (Cooperstown, Pa./Maplewood) threw a complete-game six hitter, but Messiah's lone run in the third inning was enough to win the game, 1-0.
 
King struck out four and walked one in the effort.
 
Messiah's lone run came with two outs in the third inning when Eakes singled and Baker followed with a double to left, bringing Eakes around to score.
 
Madison Walter struck out 12 and allowed two hits and just three baserunners in the complete-game shutout.
 
The Warriors got runners on second and third with one out in the fifth, but Walter struck out two to end the threat. In the sixth, a runner reached third before a groundout ended the inning.
 
The Warriors get back on the field on Monday, April 5, when they wrap up their set against Messiah with a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
