Whary tosses perfect game as Lycoming sweeps Delaware Valley

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – Sophomore Payton Whary (Coal Township, Pa./Shamokin Area) tossed the fifth perfect game in the Lycoming College softball team's history to wrap up a four-game sweep, as Lycoming beat Delaware Valley University, 9-5, in the first game, and 10-0 in a five-inning, run-rule shortened affair on Sunday, March 21, at the Delaware Valley Softball Field.

Whary faced the minimum 15 batters in the game, striking out four, getting eight groundouts and three flyouts for the Warriors' first perfect game since Hall of Famer Holly Lansberry did the deed against Keystone in 2013.

The defense was on point throughout the game, with sophomore Kaleigh Kinley (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) snagging a grounder up the middle in the fourth to get Caitlyn Pollock, and senior Taylor Gessner (Lewisburg, Pa./Meadowbrook Christian) backhanding a grounder in the fifth.

The Warriors (4-2 overall, 4-2 MAC Freedom) opened the scoring with a five-run second inning, when the leadoff hitter reached on an error before junior Morgan Klosko (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley East) singled down the line setting up a three-run blast over the left field wall by first-year Kylie Segraves (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area). First-year Rachel DeWolfe (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) kept the rally going with a single and after a double and a walk, first-year Kylie Russell (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) doubled in a run and a sac fly brought in the fifth run.

In the third inning, the Warriors tacked on four more runs. Klosko led off with a single before Segraves walked. After a pair of fly outs, sophomore Kaleigh Kinley (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle) singled, setting up a bases-clearing double by Russell, who was credited with two RBI, while Kinley scored due to obstruction. Junior Kacee Reitz (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) followed with a single through the left side to drive in Russell.

A walk, a hit batter, a single by Reitz and a throwing error allowed another run to score in the fifth.

Russell went 2-for-4 with a run, two doubles and three RBI and Segraves went 1-for-2 with two runs and a three-run homer to pace the Warriors. Klosko went 3-for-3 with two runs and Reitz was 2-for-3 with two RBI.

In the first game, the Warriors were exploded for nine runs in the middle of the game and Russell came on in relief in the third inning and shut the door on the Aggies (1-7 overall, 0-6 MAC Freedom) in the 9-5 win.

Russell earned her first collegiate win, tossing 4 1/3 innings, allowing four hits, an unearned run and striking out six in her time in the circle, starting the day by getting a strikeout to end a four-run Delaware Valley rally.

The Warriors got their offense kickstarted in the third inning when Russell reached with a two-out bunt single. A fly ball fell off the center fielder's glove as the second baseman closed in, allowing runners to reach first and third for Gessner, who singled through the right side to score a run. Sophomore Morgan Wetzel (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) followed with a three-run blast to left field. The rally continued with back-to-back singles from Klosko and Segraves before a throwing error allowed Klosko to score.

Delaware Valley responded with a four-double inning that allowed them to plate four runs before Russell took the circle and shut down the rally. She then started another rally in the fourth, reaching on an error with one out and stealing second. After a pair of walks and a lineout, Klosko was hit by a pitch to force in Russell. A wild pitch allowed another run to score before singles from Segraves and junior Morgan Christine (Riegelsville, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) plated the team's last two runs.

The Aggies got an unearned run in the fourth, but had only two more hits in the last three innings against Russell. In the sixth, two Aggies singles to start the inning, but Russell left them stranded at second and third after a strikeout and a popout.

Russell went 2-for-4 with two runs, Reitz scored twice, Gessner scored twice and had a RBI, Klosko went 2-for-3 with two runs and Segraves went 3-for-4 with a RBI.

Madison McClary led the Aggies, going 4-for-4 with a run and Jessica Stewart went 2-for-3 with a run and three RBI. Both had doubles.

Pollock (0-1) took the loss, allowing 10 hits and nine unearned runs in the complete game. She walked three and struck out four.
