Warriors sweep Aggies

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Four innings where the Lycoming College softball team put together more than one run were more than enough to lift it to a MAC Freedom doubleheader sweep of Delaware Valley University on Saturday, March 20, in the home opener at a sunny Shangraw Athletic Complex, winning the first game, 10-2, and the second, 6-0.

In the first game, the four through eight batters in the lineup each had two hits a piece as a four-run first and five-run fourth inning were more than enough for Lycoming (2-2 overall, 2-2 MAC Freedom) to post a 10-2 five-inning win over Delaware Valley (1-4 overall, 0-3 MAC Freedom).

Sophomore Morgan Wetzel (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) paced the Warriors from the cleanup position, going 2-for-4 with three runs, two RBI, a triple and a homer. Junior Morgan Klosko (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) went 3-for-4 with a run, two RBI and a double, freshman Kylie Segraves (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area), went 2-for-3 with two runs, junior Morgan Christine (Riegelsville, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) went 2-for-2 with a run, RBI and double and freshman Rachel DeWolfe (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

After a first-inning run from Delaware Valley, the Warriors responded with four in the bottom of the first, as Wetzel drilled a two-run homer to center and DeWolfe drove in two on a single up the middle. After another Delaware Valley run made it 4-2 in the third, the Warriors scored five in the fourth, with Klosko driving in Wetzel and Reitz with a single before she scored on a wild pitch. Sophomore Kaleigh Kinley (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) scored on a passed ball and Christine drove in Segraves with a double before scoring on a single from sophomore Mackenzie Glosek (Coal Township, Pa./Shamokin Area).

The game ended in the fifth with one out when Klosko doubled to drive in Wetzel.

Junior Angie King (Cooperstown, Pa./Maplewood) (1-2) tossed three innings for the Warriors, allowing five hits, three walks and two runs. She yielded to freshman Kylie Russell (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area), who tossed two perfect innings, striking out three.

Olivia Monismith (1-2) took the the loss for the Aggies, allowing nine runs, 10 hits and four walks.

The Warriors completed the sweep with a 6-0 shutout, as sophomore Payton Whary (Coal Township, Pa./Shamokin Area) (1-0) tossed six innings, allowing four hits and striking out four en route to her first win of the year.

Russell tossed the last inning, striking out two.

The Warriors got on the board in the first inning of the second game when Russell led off with a triple and sophomore Kacee Reitz (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) followed with a single, as did senior Taylor Gessner (Lewisburg, Pa./Meadowbrook Christian). After a lineout, Klosko delivered a single through the left side and a sac fly helped Reitz score. In the third, the Warriors got another run, as DeWolfe singled in Whary, who pinch ran for Klosko after she singled.

In the fourth, the Warriors tacked on their last three runs, with Reitz and Gessner leading off with singles before Wetzel doubled to center to drive in both runners. After a groundout, Segraves singled through the left side to score Wetzel.

Reitz finished 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI and Russell (2-for-3, run), Gessner (2-for-3, run) and Klosko (2-for-4) all had two hits. Segraves went 1-for-1 with two RBI.

Alexis Langenfelder (0-2) took the loss for the Aggies, allowing 11 hits and six runs in 3 1/3 innings.

The Warriors head to Delaware Valley on Sunday, March 21, to wrap up the home-and-home doubleheader weekend, facing off with the Aggies at 1 p.m. in Doylestown, Pa.
