Warriors edge out the Monarchs 50-45

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Sophomore Allison Butler (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area) posted a career-high 17 points to lead the Lycoming College women's basketball team, as it won its second consecutive game in dramatic fashion, downing King's College, 50-45, in MAC Freedom action on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 18, at Lamade Gym.
 
With the score 46-45 in the final minute, first-year Mya Wetzel (Frackville, Pa./North Schuylkill) drove in for a layup. A game-tying 3-pointer from King's fell off the mark and Zoscin iced the game with a pair of free throws with 18 seconds left.
 
Butler also collected and seven rebounds and two steals, going 7-for-16 in field goal attempts with a total three points in free-throws.
 
Junior Emily Zoscin (Weatherly, Pa./Weatherly Area) posted nine points, three assists, two steals and a team-leading 11 rebounds for the Warriors (3-7 overall, 2-1 MAC Freedom). Sophomore Emily Lockard (Benton, Pa./Benton Area) scored a career-high eight points to go with a career-best 10 rebounds and first-year Ashley Yoh (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County) posted seven points and an assist.
 
The Warriors and Monarchs (6-4 overall, 2-1 MAC Freedom) vollied through 10 lead changes and five ties, including four of those changes coming in the final 10 minutes of the game. After the Monarchs took a 40-39 lead off a jumper from Samantha Rajza with 5:42 left, Butler drove inside to take the lead back 24 seconds later and Lycoming was able to lead the rest of the way, although King's closed within a point twice.
 
A layup by Butler to start the second half tied the game at 23. Lockard's layup two minutes in gave the Warriors their first lead of the game, 25-23. Butler posted five points to lead the Warriors in the third quarter and a pair of free throws from Zoscin in the final minute helped Lycoming take a 33-32 lead into the final 10 minutes.
 
Yoh started the scoring for the Warriors, scoring two on a layup that was assisted by Zoscin before the Monarchs (3-7 overall, 2-1 MAC Freedom) followed with a run of 10 points. Opportune steals allowed Butler and Brought helped Lycoming cut an eight-point gap down to five at the end of the period.
 
Lockard kicked off the second quarter by bringing the Warriors within three points on a layup, assisted by Yoh. The Warriors defense held the Monarchs scoreless for three and a half minutes before Samantha Rajza hit a layup. The Monarchs used that to build a 23-16 lead with 3:29 left, but the Warriors answered with the last five points of the half, with Zoscin hitting a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make it a two-point game at the break.
 
Emily Morano led the Monarchs with 16 points, two steals and six rebounds along with Rajza, who finished with 14 points and six rebounds. Emily Kriston led the team with three assists and had 10 points, fours steals and four rebounds.
 
The Warriors return to the court on Wednesday, Dec. 29, as they host William Paterson at 5 p.m. in the first round of the Hoops for Hounds Classic at Lamade Gym.
