Lutz posts double-double against Stevenson

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Three Lycoming College women's basketball players finished in double figures, including the 12th double-double of the season from junior Erica Lutz (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg), but a late rally from Stevenson University helped lift it to a 68-67 MAC Commonwealth win in Lamade Gym on Saturday, Feb. 22.

The Warriors (15-10 overall, 8-8 MAC Commonwealth) will enter the MAC Commonwealth Championship as the No. 5 seed and will take a trip to Stevenson (13-12 overall, 8-8 MAC Commonwealth), who earned the No. 4 seed with the win, on Monday, Feb. 22, for the first round of the tournament at 7 p.m.

Lutz finished with 16 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and a block, as she tied Shelby Mueller (2017-18) with 12 double-doubles in a season, the second-most in program history. Senior Akilah McFadden (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists and freshman Kenzie Reed (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) posted 10 points, three steals, two blocks and four rebounds. Sophomore Kelly Vuz (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional) and senior Morgan Mader (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) each posted nine points and senior Megan Helminiak (Williamsport, Pa./Neumann Regional) added five.

A 3-pointer from Mader with 4:58 left in the fourth quarter gave Lycoming an eight-point lead, but a full-court press as the clock ticked under two minutes led to two turnovers and two buckets for Stevenson that turned it into a one-point game at 62-61. Mader hit another 3-pointer with 1:19 left and the team's alternated free throws, but Olivia Coleman hit a second-chance layup to make it 67-65. Stevenson got the ball back and called timeout with seven seconds left and with the set play, Brandi Hall hit a step-back 3-pointer with 2.9 seconds left. The Warriors got a look as time expired, but it bounced off the rim.

Lycoming led for 38 minutes in the game, taking control in the first quarter with a 9-2 run, which helped it take a 22-18 lead into second quarter, where another 15-7 run gave the team a 39-25 lead after a 3-pointer from Helminiak with 3:58 left in the period. Stevenson cut the gap to 43-35 at the break.

The Mustangs closed stayed within three possessions throughout the third quarter and cut the lead down to three at 55-52 with 7:45 left before Lycoming responded with a 7-2 run, capping it with Mader's three.

Denia Campbell led the Mustangs with 18 points and Campbell added 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Hall also had 15 points.
