WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – In the first half, the Lycoming College women's soccer team fired 14 shots, but it wasn't until the last, on a breakaway with four minutes to play in the half, that the team broke onto the scoreboard. In the second half, it took just three shots, but connected on one more goal as it finished off a 2-0 win over Gwynedd Mercy University on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 1, at UPMC Field.
Â
The Warriors (1-1 overall) notched the team's first shutout since a 0-0 double overtime tie with King's on Sept. 20, 2017, as they held the Griffins (0-2 overall) to just two shots. Junior
Samantha Marvin (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) turned away the lone shot on goal, leaping on a first half shot and flipping the ball over the crossbar.
Â
The Warriors, who pressured, throughout much of the first half, finally broke onto the scoreboard in the 41
st minute when sophomore
Alicia Blizzard (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) delivered a pass down the left sideline to junior
Elle Sarracco (Wantage, N.J./High Point Regional), who blasted past a pair of defenders, then dribbled past the Griffins' keeper before finding the left side of the net.
Â
In the second half, freshman
Hannah Lounsbury (Wassaic, N.Y./Webutuck) deflected a Gwynedd Mercy pass, dribbled once and fired a 28-yard bullet into the top half of the net.
Â
Marvin made one save in the first half before yielding to sophomore
Bronwen Lewis (Crespatown, Md./Allegany) and sophomore
Bekki Weller (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg), who split time in the second half, seeing one shot.
Â
Emily McCullough stopped 10 shots in the first half for the Griffins before Daniella Repkoe played in the second half.
Â
The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, Sept. 4, when they host Goucher at 4 p.m. at UPMC Field.
