Warriors' season ends at Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Junior Drew Collins (Victor, N.Y./Victor) and sophomore Dominick Massaro (Centereach, N.Y./Sachem North) led the No. 3-seed Lycoming College with a goal and two assists a piece, but top-seeded Stevenson University, won its seventh straight MAC Commonwealth Championship with a  23-4 win on Saturday night, May 4, at Mustang Stadium.
 
The Warriors reached a conference final for the first time since 2005, as it finished tied for second in the MAC Commonwealth with a 6-2 record and finished 9-9 overall under sixth-year head coach Chris Scanlon.
 
Freshman Justin Joseph (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area) won 20-of-31 at the faceoff 'x', posting seven groundballs for the Warriors and senior Michael Tenant (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) finished with 15 saves.
 
The Mustangs (12-7 overall) jumped out with the first three goals of the game, but the Warriors got a quick strike score from sophomore Brandon Waden (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) with 10:53 left, but the Mustangs added three more goals by the end of the quarter.
 
The Warriors added a goal 10 seconds into the second quarter off a quick pass from Collins to Massaro. The Mustangs scored the next nine goals before Collins scored a man-up goal off a dish from Massaro with 8:06 left in the third quarter.
 
Senior Andy Ream (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) also added a third-quarter goal.
 
Ethan Christenson, the MAC Offensive Player of the Year, also earned the MAC Commonwealth Championship Tournament MVP with five goals and three assists. Will Smith added four goals and an assist. Marc Poust stopped four shots to earn the win in 52 minutes of play in net.
 
The Warriors had several breakthroughs during the season, with six players scoring more than 20 points for the first time since 2010. Three of the six reached the 40-point mark, as Ream finished with 61 points (37 goals, 24 assists), Massaro with 45 (31 goals, 14 assists) and Collins with 44 (24 goals, 20 assists). The team, led by Joseph – who won 61 percent (193-of-319), won more than 50 percent of its faceoffs for the first time since 2012 and Tenant finished the season having set program standards for saves in a game (28 vs. Ithaca), season (248) and career (690).
 
Ream finished his career seventh in school history with 117 goals and senior Travis Rode (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) set the program record by appearing in his 64th career game against the Mustangs. Senior Eric Schutta (Frenchtown, N.J./Delaware Valley) finished third in program history with 62 caused turnovers, while classmates Austin Arroyo (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) is sixth with 51 and senior Cole Masterson (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) seventh with 49.
