Warriors split with Albright

READING, Pa. – Junior Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) tripled in two runs to highlight a three-run fifth inning and freshman Mikayla Aldenderfer (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) earned her second straight complete-game victory to lead the Lycoming College softball team to a 4-2 win in the back half of a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader to split with Albright College on Sunday, April 7. Lycoming fell, 5-0, in the opener.
 
The Warriors (14-8 overall, 3-5 MAC Commonwealth) scored the game's first run in the top of the fourth inning to get its first lead of the day. Kline led off with a walk and moved up a base on a bunt by freshman Morgan Klosko (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West). Junior Darci Warriner (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area) reached on an infield single and freshman Morgan Christine (Reigelsville, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) singled to center to knock in Kline.
 
Lycoming plated three more runs in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 4-0. Freshman Isabella Gackenbach (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) and senior Liz Nace (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) started the inning off with singles and Gessner reached on a fielder's choice to set up first and second with two outs. Kline cashed in with a two-RBI triple down the right field line and later came around to score on a wild pitch.
 
The Lions (10-14 overall, 4-2 MAC Commonwealth) used three hits in the bottom half of the fifth to cut the lead in half with two runs, but they could get no further, as Aldenderfer retired seven of the last nine batters she faced.
 
Aldenderfer (9-4) allowed two runs on six hits in seven innings of work, striking out two – including getting the last batter of the game looking.
 
Nace went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and Kline was 2-for-2 with a double, triple, run scored and two RBI. Gackenbach and Warriner also singled and Christine finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.
 
Allison Melahn took the loss for Albright, going 4 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits. Camille Sears threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.
 
Brooke Yerger was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored and Jessica Rodriguez finished 2-for-2 with a run to lead the Lions offense.
 
In game one, Camille Sears threw Albright's first no-hitter in three years while the Lions scored five runs in their last two at bats to post a 5-0 win.
 
The Lions broke a scoreless-tie in the bottom of the fifth inning with back-to-back RBI doubles to take a 2-0 lead and tacked on three more runs in the bottom half of the sixth.
 
Nace (5-4) threw six complete innings, allowing five runs on 11 hits and struck out two in the loss.
Brooke Yerger finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored to lead the Lions' offense.
 
The Warriors are back on the field on Wednesday, April 10, when they head to Messiah College for a 3 p.m. MAC Commonwealth doubleheader at Starry Field.
