Warriors sweep mid-week twinbill with Penn College

WILLIAMSPORT Pa. – Freshman Morgan Klosko (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) tripled in two-runs to spark a seven-run eighth inning to lead the Lycoming College softball team to a 9-3 victory, wrapping up a sweep of Penn College in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday night, April 3, at Elm Park. Lycoming won the opener, 7-1.

In game two, the Warriors (12-6 overall) scored seven runs, while sending 10 hitters to the plate in the top of the eighth inning to turn a tie game into a 9-2 lead in the extra frame.

Sophomore Taylor Gessner (Lewisburg, Pa./Meadowbrook Christian) was placed at second and junior Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) bunted for a single to kick off the inning. Klosko followed with a triple to deep center and scored on a sacrifice fly from Darci Warriner (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro). Seniors Rachel Duda (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) and Lexie Kovin (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) both reached on singles and later scored off a triple from Madison Brown (McElhattan, Pa./Central Mountain). Liz Nace (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) reached on an error to score Brown and Gessner followed with a double to plate Nace and round out the scoring.

Nace (5-2) allowed the placed runner on second to score, but that was the only damage that was done in the bottom half of the eighth, as she retired the side to earn the victory. Senior Cayla Treaster (Williamsport, Pa./Montoursville Area) threw a strong six complete innings in her first start of the season, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out two.

Eight Warriors reached safely with a base hit with Brown leading the way, going 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and two runs. Kline and Gessner each finished 2-for-5 with a run and Gessner added an RBI. Klosko knocked in three runs and Warriner, Duda, Nace and Kovin all had a hit.

Lycoming broke the scoreless tie with a run in the top of the sixth when Klosko scored Nace with a sacrifice fly. Penn College (8-8 overall) pushed across two in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead into the seventh.

Brown hit a two-out infield single in the top of the seventh and came around to score off a single from Nace that got by the left fielder. Nace entered the game for Treaster on the mound to throw a scoreless seventh and send the game into extra innings.

Elizabeth Asher was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Taylor Brooks was 1-for-4 with an RBI double to lead the Wildcats.

Morgan Heritage allowed five earned runs on 12 hits in the losing effort.

Kline capitalized with a two-RBI single to center and Klosko grounded out to second to push across another run.

The Wildcats cut the lead to one in the fifth but the Warriors answered with three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to extend their lead to six.  Kline led off the sixth by hitting an inside the park homerun with a rocket down the left field line that made its way all the way to the wall. Warriner later singled and was pushed across by a double to left by freshman Kacee Reitz (Milton, Pa./Milton Area), who then scored on a single from Duda.
